Getting a stored bike back on the road - what to do?
 

Hello All

I haven't rode my bike since november and am gonna get it goin again tomorrow, i've been told that since its only been a few months and i had it serviced 2 months before i stopped riding, i should just be able to stick a battery in and be off.

I'm not so sure, so is there anything i should be aware off when i fire my sv up. its a curvy 2002. should i worry about the brakes, or the fuel that was in the tank, you know just stuff??

sorry, yeah just in my garden on its stand, i dont have a garage.

why did someone change the title of this? its given people the wrong impression already;(

in that case I'll presume it's been snow covered at some point then, I'd want to do a brake strip and regrease (copperslip behind the pads and on the pins, rubber grease on the pistons and seals), check the major electrical connections (might be a little green, just clean them up),then just the normal, good tyre inspection(condition and pressures), chain well greased,cables( probably get away with a squirt of WD40), levers (grease pivots) all electrics and lights work, fluids are correct (make sure you have no emulsification on the inside of the oil filler cap(white sludge) as well), then a gentle test ride before thrashing it.

hey thanks. i'll try and do what you suggested as i'm a novice really, i'm just not goin near the brakes. just because i'm clueless with brakes.

One of mines been SORN'd and off road since Nov. Stood waiting patiently. In my instance, she'll just need the battery and some petrol and away she goes, but shes been played with and all the bearings greased with vigor within the last year or two, so very doubtful anything will need attention.
Ahhh wait a minute, I'll need to take the brake calipers off and give them a clean, oh and check the tyres, even though they have been turned regular, you never know if they have a flat spot(but then they've been sat on thick rubber matts) Carbs might need balancing, in fact will, maybe cleaning......hmmmm not just ride away eh!!

Brakes stripped and greased
Oil change for fresh oil.
Battery charged/ checked
Chain checked- if it aint been oiled or moved you may be looking at new chain and sprockets

In short a v good service
