14500 service - Info required.

Hi,

My 14500 mile service is due in around 2 weeks. Contacted suzuki for a quote and they say it will be around £400 due to checking the valve clearances? Thought it sounded pretty expensive. Could anyone recommend a garage in the bournemouth area that would be more competitive?

Or....

I would also consider carrying out the service myself, I have only recently started riding so havent worked on bikes before. But have some car knowledge and am an engineer by trade so have no probs getting my hands dirty. What tools would be required / is there a guide i could follow?

Thanks in advance :D

Jack

The big bit is the valve clearances, you need a 16mm sparkplug wrench, 10 and 8 allen sockets, metric feeler gauges, general spanners.

I would definitely recommend getting a service manual.

Dealers are expensive, local indi garages should quote between £120 and £180 for that service including parts.

Or do it yourself as chris says. I've only ever checked them...if you find they're out of tolerance then you have to shim them. That's the bit that puts me off!.

I didn't think valve clearances needed checked until around 20k - 25k miles??

You thought wrong then :D
It's pre 20k definitely on an sv. Somewhere between 14.5k and 16k IIRC.
