laptops/bikes
what is the org opinion on the best way to carry one.
Mine is huge (just like me) a Dell M6400. The bag that it came with is only just big enough to fit the laptop in, never mind any thing else such as power supply, note books, external drives etc. So I am telling work to buy me a new bag. I am not a fan of having a rugsack etc strapped to my back when on a bike. I am always concious of what it may do to my back should I ever be offed. I tend to commute by bike if there are reasonable prospects of a dry day, otherwise car. I do have a rentec rack that I can fit, but to be honest a GSXR with a rack is almost as bad as an SV with top box. So are my fears about a rugsack type back unfounded? or should I accept form and purpose over looks and fit the rack? |
Re: laptops/bikes
I carry mine in a rucksack inside a neoprene skin, but in your position Tim I think I'd fit the rack. Although I'm not sure what tailpack options there are.

Re: laptops/bikes
Ride with a rucksack every single day. Have done for about 3 years. Previous to that, I used a topbox. And i've been down the road.
You can feel the weight of a laptop, but its never been an issue, apart from when I wear my one peice with a hump on the back. |
Re: laptops/bikes
bungee it to rear seat

Re: laptops/bikes
I'd have thought the likes of kriega would do something with laptops & gadgets in mind, but still with decent weight distribution and a bit of back protection maybe?

Re: laptops/bikes
I have a neoprene skin in a top box and a smaller camel back type for psu etc. I also have a lowepro rucksack as it was pretty much the only 17in one i could find. I just bought a bagster tech city bag which will be delivered end of this week hopefully tho I'm not sure I can shoe horn the 17in so time for an new lappy too I guess.

Re: laptops/bikes
i wouldnt bungie a laptop to a rear seat as you could end up damaging it. backpack or tailpack (i know some people use a kriega20) would be the way forward but yours is a bit of a beast!

Re: laptops/bikes
I use a rucksack regularly with no fears, I also have a Renntec rack for my GSX-R and I have no fears about that either, it's practical. However, a large laptop will not fit too comfortably on a Renntec rack anyway as the platform is actually quite small. You could certainly get it on there securely but it would take some tying down to make sure it wasn't going to slip off.

Re: laptops/bikes
i personally would go with this
http://store.planet-knox.com/knox/lu...ack-ruck-sack/ my brother has used one for 5 or 6 months to commute from aberystwyth to swansea uni with his lap top course books and all manner of other crap in it, none of its ever got wet, and its built specificly for bike use, plus i found the helmet net really handy when i borrowed it. |
