I agree with that... fixed cameras are predictable, radar guns are random.

However, police budgets have been cut too, so less people, with less time to be stood with radar guns.

The articles says both fixed cameras and camera vans will go. Plod will still do radar traps of course, but it should mean a net decrease in traps I'm guessing, which can't be a bad thing!

The vans and cameras are run and operated by The Safety Camera Partnership, not the police. All their locations have to be publicised.

If there is none of them in a county, then you would presume the police will then have to become more proactive in that area, police with radar guns can hide anywhere and don;t have to publicise their locations.

Since the advent of fixed and mobile cameras I've seen one speedtrap with a hairdryer. One. And that was about four years ago.

Look at the alternatives - hairdryers and unmarked cars. Oh joy. Swindon scrapped cameras, but it has an entire armada of unmarked cars cruising around waiting to nick the unwary for tonking down the M4. Ahem.

In the last two or three months I've seen six mobile cameras, either in the form of a police van with a camera poking through the back window or a sneaky copper peeking out from behind a tree. Four of these times I was alerted by courteous oncoming cars (one of which was a nice man in a Range Rover who flashed to warn me as I was overtaking at a hundred heading towards one). I, in turn, made sure I alerted as many people as I could by signalling them to slow down as they approached, drawing circles in the air with my left hand to imitate the revolving blue lights. People are always thankful of this. If I had the time or tools, I'd love to have pulled over and made a sign to warn people!

Warning people is OK. Commendable. Making a sign is liable to get you nicked and potentially banged up. Yet also commendable.

Wouldn't actually do it, but I would like to. :smt039
