Golden parachutes

No, its not some sort of kinky sax.

The BP board is negotiating a severance package with its current CEO of BP. As the guy who is ultimately responsible for the mess in the Gulf of Mexico he gets to fall on his sword, and will get a whacking great payout for failure. Maybe he is the victim of media, and US Govt, pressure or whatever.

Not wanting to highlight this particular case but more in general terms, why is it that once you get far enough up the food chain, e.g. Steve Maclaren the ex-England mgr, you get huge sums of money when 'sacked' for failure?

Us mere mortals just get the boot.

No sure about the BP fella but with regards to football managers they are give an contract for a fixed period of time, if either party wants to get out before the time is up then they need to agree terms.

I thought they are suggesting a £1m payout and his pension ~all of which he is entitled to by his contract.

Whilst he might be CEO of the company and therefore the buck stops with him, no doubt he will not have been the single link in the chain having caused this incident.

Americans obviously need a bad guy and he was it, although he really hasnt helped himself with the gaffs he has made through this oil leak.

On the other hand he has had an enormous amount of air time, and has been under a microscope of enormous pressure and so the odd gaff was understandable, the sailing incident though with his son, well, one might have known that was going to spell trouble.
