Running poorly and popping.
Hello all, first forum post please be kind :)
I have a '02 SV650 with ~7k miles that I bought new and is literally almost completely stock. Only changes have been tires, fluids and spark plugs. The bike sat in storage for a couple of years and its been rough getting it going since bringing it back out (bad gas in tank and carbs). I've had a mechanic doing all the work but still having some issues and looking for guidance. Main issue is rough running at low rpms, lower than 2k usually - popping from exhaust, stalls when touching the throttle while idling for a bit. I also get some surging when running holding the throttle steady at higher rpms > 3k. Anyone want to take a whack at what my issues might be? Almost forgot that the low pressure fuel pump died and has been replaced and there is a new line from the tank to the pump with a filter in it as well. Thanks, Steve |
Re: Need some advice
As its only affecting low revs I'd look at the Pilot jets in the carbs which will be gummed up.

Re: Need some advice
Thanks for the quick response. Supposedly the mechanic took the carbs apart and cleaned them up. The shop has had the bike three times now so I would hope that gummed up jets is not something they have overlooked.
While I'm not mechanically incapable, I've never done work on carbs. Any tips on how I can check to see if they are gummed up? |
Re: Need some advice
On the presumption the air filter has been changed, check the rubbers for air leaks and balance the carbs, then let us know how it is.

Re: Need some advice
i would put some reddex into the tank a few times as see what happens.
after that carb strip or a battery replacement. Mine did cut outs at low revs and it turned out to be the battery |
Re: Running poorly and popping.
i had this problem. make sure u dont have any airleaks. the choke is not on, you fuel dose not have water or dirt init. as andrewsmith said put some reddex init might just be a small bit of dirt
i wish you the best of luck as i could never get mine to work so had to get some new carbs |
