More old school heavy metal

Well seeing as YC has been posting about his...

I've been mostly busy recently as my wife had a baby in April (hence not posting much) but I've also picked up a new project.

Harrison L5 lathe by fastdruid, on Flickr

Its a 1946-47 Harrison L5 4.5" swing (9" US), 24 inch between centres with gap bed (up to 8.5" (17" US) in the gap section) and 8spd geared headstock. Powered cross and sliding feeds and 3spd screwcutting gearbox. with the VFD 0-1500+RPM (it'll do more but as the 1500rpm was the limit of the 'normal' models and the 2000rpm models were slightly different I feel best to stick to 1500rpm)

~400Kg of real brit iron! :-)

It had very obviously not been used for years as everything was gummed up so spent a load of time with the paraffin.

Came with a load of tooling, most importantly a milling slide, 3 & 4 jaw chucks, one face plate, one between centres drive plate, some dog clamps, pinvices, clamps, a engineering vice, lots of reams, lots of drills and a load of HSS bits. Plus a full set of changewheels including the all important 127t for metric threads. Gives me 1mm to 11mm metric pitch and unlike YC's comes with the screwcutting table. :-)

What it didn't come with was a motor so fitted and adjustable motor plate

Then a brand new WEG 2.2Kw 4 pole 3p motor, I'm loving the ease of taper lock bushes!

Add a WEG VFD

And she works a treat!

So far I've been making bits for it so some new handles for the cross and saddle handwheels

And then today an adapter to fit the dickson QCTP.

Well nearly, I need to mill down the knurling tool I have as its for a larger lathe and too big!

Re: More old school heavy metal

so I guess you need to invest in a knurling tool.

Re: More old school heavy metal

I have a multi-head J&S one but its a massive 27mm shank and I can only fit up to 22mm in my toolpost holders. I think the previous user just bolted some of the tools straight to the compound slide with a plate holding them down and two bolts at the back.

The choice I have is to flog the one I have and buy another one or just take a ~6mm slice off the bottom of it.
