Where to buy genuine parts?
 

I've got a 2001 SV650s. Im new to biking and needed to ask a novice question.
Basically I want to change the air filter back to stock (Bike came with a BMC race type filter but i'd rather have the paper filter back for engine perseverance and don't mind if that means a drop in performance)

Suzukipart.com does genuine (OEM) suzuki parts but its based is the U.S. (Can anyone confirm if 'OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer' is an American term?)

I know i can find parts on ebay but can i be sure that they are the same design and quality as the parts produce directly by suzuki? i found this earlier:

You don't say where you are. There are Suzuki dealers around the country - you may be near one of them.

Im in Aberdeen Scotland so i tend to buy online as options up here can be limited and quite expensive. I was surprised there isn't an online shop for genuine suzuki parts in the U.K.

I had a look online and the closest is Gillanders Motors in Peterhead. It looks they they mostly deal in cars but ill give them a call tomorrow and ask.

If you want online try Robinsons Foundry, they're in Canterbury.

They have some stuff online but if you find the part numbers, try the Ron Ayers fiche, click here, you can get the numbers and search the Robinsons site for prices in this country from them.

I assume thats parts direct from suzuki? With those prices i'm begining to see why people buy off Ebay.

Robinsons sell genuine Suzuki parts and have an excellent delivery service. El Squidlious is spot on in recommending them.

Depends what you need I suppose, many pattern parts are just fine, but know what you're buying - cheaper definitely isn't always better.

As for air/oil filters, like you I always like to use OEM, they are a known quantity whereas aftermarket unbranded things aren't.

Air filters which claim improved performance usually deliver very very little measurable improvement, and if it's due to allowing more air through then they invariably also let more dirt through too. A decent new OE air filter element will result in typically less than 1% pressure drop at rated power, and even if it was 2% and an aftermarket one gave 1% would you actually notice 1% more power? When I was signing off air filters for car engines we worked to an increase in dP of 1.5% atmospheric (i.e. dP = +1.5kPa over new) as the service life, which was determined by dust addition tests (ah yes, good old "Arizona Fine"!)

You can usefully extend the service life by removing the filter periodically and applying a vac cleaner to the filter inlet to draw dirt out the way it went in. In your area the air will be very clean anyway, industrial areas with carbon/hydrocarbon pollutants are much worse for filter life. Example, I have just fitted the second new air filter to my car at 60k miles (i.e. 30k miles service life), I bet the old one was still perfectly serviceable but hey, hang the expense. I'd look at 30k mile sto be reasonable on an SV, so a little extra cost for an OE filter is trivial compared to fuel etc.

Howdoo bud, Shirlaws on Crown Street are the local Suzuki dealer. Whether or not you want to give them your money is a different matter though ;)

Any particular reason you don't want to use ebay? Can get oem parts there as well.
