electrical problem - help!

hi!
i rode my bike yesterday and the speedo, went nuts, claiming i was doing 186, and wouldn't give me a sensible reading at any point. By the end of my journey the whole lcd display seemed to be flickering. When i came back to the bike 8 hours later the battery was completely dead - i might as well have not bothered turning on the ignition.

The battery is only a couple of weeks old so that's presumably not the problem. Any guesses anyone? I'm not good with electrics! Cheers!

Bit of a cliché on here but have you checked the reg/rec?

Does sound as though it's not charging and the battery was struggling as you were riding.
Have you got a multimeter handy? (testing the charging system is documented in hayned if you have access to one)

Aye, Sir Sid Squid has numerous posts here about the voltages you should be getting.

Is the reg/rec going a common fault with sv 650's? It looks like i will have to test that and the alternator and hopefully i will identify the problem easily. :)

Yeah, R/R is one of the more common faults.

I thought the R/R issue was with the old fashioned carb bikes?

Sounds more like loose battery connection to me.
Check contacts on battery, and under green cover under seat (starter relay), check main fuse contacts for corrosion also.

Any contacts like that you can loosen them, give them a wiggle and a dose of ACF50 or grease then nip back up.

If that does not solve it then check charging system but the speedo and rev counter going mental is usually a loose battery wire.

YOrkie Chris, you win the prize! (if there was one).

Fianlly got back to my work car park with a suitable allen key to get the seat off and guess what: yep, loose battery connector.

Think you can guess what I am going to add in to the tool kit on the bike!

Cheers for the advice everyone. Looks like my reg/rec will live to fight another day!
