The 7100 is fully synth

5100 is a semi synth by looks (but high in the synthetics)

Esters are a type of synthetic oil compound. Not common, or cheap. I think motul are one of main users.

5100 is fine, you don't need full synth.

Re: ester oil what is it?

A large proportion of the oil will be whats called base stock. This is either a petroleum (mineral) or synthetic (ester) base. Then additives are added which makes up the rest of the oil.

Semi synthetics that are made from an synthetic ester base are better than the petroleum mineral based semi synthetics. But there are some products which contain a hydro cracked or moleculary converted petroleum mineral base which is the best of the mineral based oils that you can get as they have higher heat stability than non converted mineral bases.

There is alot that goes into oils. Generally though id always suggest a synthetic based semi or fully. One advantage of a fully synth oil is that it has better stability and is less likely to sheer down under hard use. This also means the oil will require less frequent changes.

But as ^ says the 5100 will be fine.

Actually Chris, that's what the oil companies want you to believe. Natural castor oil is very high in (natural) esters (naturally slippy compounds) and castor oil is both cheap and plentiful! :-) this is why Castrol R war (is) so good. Unfortunately castor oil burns dirtily, producing coking. But esters are still cheap and plentiful. C
