Frozen Throttle & Front Brake.
So it was snowing when I drove home last nigh got soaked, covered the bike up and went for a beer.
This morning the ignition barrell was frozen solid, the disc lock frozen solid luckily I have some lock de-icer so 5 mins later they were free. Jumped on the bike and low and behold I can't rev the bloody thing due to the throttle being iced closed... 15 mins of warming it up late and I can pull off. Grabbed some brake on the A2 and the level is sticky, but braked no problem except for the fact that I had to push the lever back into the off position. Looking back the signs were there for jumping in the car, but I got in on what was one of the most hairy rides ever with the coldest conditions I have ever experienced. Just went out to the car park to wrap the essential bits that were frozen this morning and the throttle is stuck again, what should I do? I have wrapped a t-shirt, a fleece and a scarf round it but have a feeling it will be in vein. |

Re: Frozen Throttle & Front Brake - HELP!!!
wd40 to disperse the water, or pull it all apart and dry out, then grease

Re: Frozen Throttle & Front Brake - HELP!!!
the office has just been discussing the use of WD40 on thier door sills in order to prevent them from freezing shut over night following an eldery woman in admin spraining her wrist in what can only be called a bizzare chain of events which followed her finding her car door frozen shut.
to put in perspective the cold today, I've just been onsite at Elland and having finished my brew I chucked the last 5mm out of the cabin door onto the floor. Went in to rinse my cup off and pop it back in the cupboard, put on my hat and gloves walked out of the cabin and the coffee I'd chucked out less than 2minutes previous was frozen solid! |
Re: Frozen Throttle & Front Brake - HELP!!!
Silicone grease for waterproof lubrication, switches and any moving parts such as locks, door buttons and throttles. We use it on the rubbers of Fridge doors[-22c] to stop them sticking and it also preserves the rubbers.
Preventative maintenance is what it is all about Dry it all out tonight with a hairdryer and even if you give it a good squirt with an oil can[Not WD40] it should be OK for a while |
Re: Frozen Throttle & Front Brake - HELP!!!
i would have thought wd40 would be ace in this application as its primelerally (sp) for water displacement which is what you would want here?

Re: Frozen Throttle & Front Brake - HELP!!!
Does it work on ice? That lock deicing stuff followed by some WD40 would probably do it, most deicers are isopropyl alcohol based.
Brake levers sticking like that can also be corrosion caused by salt too, WD it for now but it needs removing and greasing. |
Re: Frozen Throttle & Front Brake - HELP!!!
if I can get it home tonight I'll be ok because I am going to wash it and put it away for the next two weeks as I will be mainly drunk!
