Running rough, no rev counter and drinking petrol.

Hello,

I've developed (another) issue with my curvy.

It's running rough- as though the front cylinder is wet and the rev counter is showing 0- though occasionally the front cylinder chugs and the revs jump up then go again.

I've checked the fuses- they look fine. I've also sprayed some GT85 into the front cylinder drain hole and around the front plug cover.

There's power to the rest of the dashboard (mph and lights).

It's showing a flashing fuel light at 100 miles (should do this from about 125 onwards) and the choke doesn't feel right.

So my guess, before pulling things apart is-

Front choke plunger jammed....
Either flooding front carb or fouling the plug...
Causing front cylinder to cut out- lack of which causes rev counter to not work proply
As front choke is probably right out it's also chucking loads of fuel through the front, causing it to use more.

Can anyone hazard any more suggestions around my (slightly informed) critique?

I bloody hope that's all it is.... :)

Seeing as the rev counter is playing up I'd check the front coil and wiring etc first.

Well. Resistance on the front coil is high (about double the spec- 9-10ohms). The terminal at the plug end looks rotten!

It actually ran OK for a few minutes again, then started playing up again. I guess it's when it heats up that it fails... Replacement is on order.

Also took the front choke plunger out- it was filthy, but working OK. So cleaned it and the socket and put it all back together.

First use of my new Abba stand. What a difference that makes!!

So- fairings are off. Some fastglas going on the rhs fairing to tidy it up. K+N is out for cleaning (it's filthy!). Could be a good time to fit new plugs too...

I experienced my first one cylinder ride yesterday but the rev counter was working OK. 12k service is due now and I have the air and oil filter. Just waiting for the oil (Putoline DX4) and plugs to arrive (ordered 2 of THESE ) The Abba stand is unwrapped and waiting for it's first lift and the fenda extenda is ready to go on. Around the front cylinder is quite cruddy so I guess I will have to get this off before I start. Hot soapy water and a soft brush unless anyone has any better ideas?

I've been using iridium CR8's for the last 2 years. I think they do help cold starts.

Sounds more like you have water getting in the front plug- so you've got the right solution ready to go on the bike. Bit of silicone grease around the plug cap might help too.

Yep- that'll help. GT85 or a degreaser might help too. Soft (ie cheap washing up) brush is good for that sort of work.

Cheers. I have grease and degreaser in the shed. I will have to see what soft nail brushes the other half has! The front is just caked on dirt and fly's so a good soak first I think. I recently found out about the drain hole in the front cylinder so I will check that as well. Judging buy common faults from the forum I may have a go at cleaning the choke plungers. The choke works fine, but while I am at it.

Be prepared- the screws for the choke plungers can be a right pain to undo! Try some pentrating spray on them first...

"penetrating".................... Isn't that a fabulous word?

I need to get some plusgas as I have run out. I have a good selection of S/S hex allan bolts to replace them but I do understand they are made of plasticine. I do have a BIG hammer, just in case.
