wont go above 1st
hi all
on the way home from work my bike just decided that i did'nt want to go abouve 1st gear. I can go up into neutral then back to first, but can not get into any other gear. have any of you come across this before? thank in advance |
Re: wont go above 1st
check all the usual things like chain adjustment, oil level, clutch adjustment then check the gear linkage. if all is ok on them then it could be internals
more info on the bike would be good ;) |
Re: wont go above 1st
Check clutch cable adjustment?
Is it going into Neutral easily or does it take alot of effort (whilst the engines running) |
Re: wont go above 1st
don't be lazy, give the relevant imformation (as per guidelines) and you just might get a relevent answer....
but in answer to the actual question you asked....yes Cheers Mark. |

Re: wont go above 1st
stick it on center stand abba stand or what ever start it up and on tick over try and click the the gear leaver up through the gears useing the clutch.if the gear leaver wont go up through the gears you may well have internal problems, dont panic yet but it could just be a broken spring on the gear change mechanism, theres a big spring on the other end of shaft that the gear leaver is on this is the spring that returns the gear leaver back to the same position after a gear change, and there are 2 springs on the selector drum, this part acts more like a ratchet on a socket set and turns the selector drum it turns in either direction to change up or down the gear box,and all these springs and the pawls if broken can normally be replaced with out splitting engine but you will need to take clutch basket off to get access

Re: wont go above 1st
Does the pedal ' self-centre ' after change?
If not, clean out all the carp & regrease. |

You are trying to get second whilst moving, yes? Assuming you are then it's doubtful the problem is clutch related, but it's worth making sure that it's working correctly so; can you get first and nuetral without problem? If yes then most likely problems are: Lever is not moving freely. Centring spring broken. External selector components; pins/claws/spring damaged. |
Re: wont go above 1st
Could even be that the gearchange lever boss has slipped round on the splines if the bolt has come loose. I had that happen on my GSXR1000 and had to ride home 30 miles stuck in 4th gear
