Numpty alert - how to fit pad springs?
Hi guys,
Done a search of the forum and nowhere can I find a detailed description (ideally with images) of how to change the rear pads (SK4). My problem is thus: Having stripped down the rear caliper I took it to my inlaws to use my father-in-laws compressor to pop the piston. Then Christmas came and went the time has come to reassemble ready for the winter commute once again... I duly start reassembly: first the cleaning, then the red grease, then the pistons, then the .... oh sugar what's this bit of metal that's left over?? The pad spring appears to be seated, so what can it be? ...Cue a few minutes of "fit the shape in the hole" with no results. I've fitted it a way I think it should go (deduced assumption: it's to allow the pad that's opposite the piston side to "spring" back) but on fitting the caliper it keeps flippin' popping out! Not sure if I'm fitting it hamfistedly or whether it's been out for so long it's got a taste of freedom! Anyway, it's not in situ at the moment but it's OK(??) as there is no fluid in the rear brake ("tidied" the bleed kit into a box when we just recently moved) so as long as I don't try to use the rear brake I'll be fine... But where is it meant to fit? Pictures follow. 1. The caliper, with what I thought was the pad spring (it is in the right way round?) http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5129/...576697_z_d.jpg 2. Piece of metal: http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5121/...ff352a7e_d.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5083/...1ebb844e_d.jpg My attempts at locating: http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5168/...ddb7774e_d.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5003/...836a6f90_d.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5088/...1fb33743_d.jpg Sorry for dodgy picture quality ... I'm still running an old Sony Erricson (proper camera was flat :() Cheers, Al. |
Re: Numpty alert - pad springs...
Has anyone got any ideas at all?

Re: Numpty alert - pad springs...
Could be totally wrong, but is that not the pad guide which sits flush on the front or the caliper bracket just behind the forward bolt hole.

Re: Numpty alert - pad springs...
2 is not the calliper spring, thats the bit that sits on the calliper mount.
1 is the pad spring and it is the right way round |
Re: Numpty alert - pad springs...
Ahhh that explains why it doesn't fit - didn't think it was quite right that the pad spring had something on top of it!
Any instructions on how it fits on the caliper? Cheers, Al. |

Re: Numpty alert - pad springs...
It fits just behind the forward bolot hole on the caliper bracket/mount and sits above the disc.
