Cheap bike project wanted. SV? Suggestions??
Hi all,
I'm looking to buy a bike soon so I can get it ready for the summer, especially keen on V-twins and liked a SV that I borrowed a couple of times last year. Will be happy to end up with something reliable and fun, cheaper is best so some scrapes & battle scars are expected. Have seen a few SV advertised on here around £800 as spares/repairs with minor plastic damage, it would be nice to find something like that locally (North East) - let me know if you have an "old faithful" at the back of the shed that you would like to see put back on the road rather than broken for spares :smt039 Don't mind doing some work but not looking for any "bent frame & missing engine" projects  Last year was using an older VT500 for commuting (great fun ) and a ZZR1100 for weekend fun / trackdays (lunacy :smt007). Very open-minded (ooh err missus :smt018) just let me know what you have for sale and we'll take it from there :smt039 Wish list ( it's not going to happen but there's no harm in me asking :D ) Price £500 - £800 ( can go higher for the right bike, lower would be even better - and a miracle :smt103) A couple of months tax & test would be good news so I can use it for a while to see what it needs. Location within 20 miles of Darlington ( but would consider anywhere Yorkshire - Northumberland, maybe other areas...) Size 500cc - 1100cc ? V-twin preferred, will look at anything. Faired or part-faired if possible but naked may be ok Japanese expected but open to suggestions. Age isn't important... The only thing I won't take a chance on - it must be legal with V5 etc. Now away to see what interesting offers I get in the post :drink: :smt046 |

Result !
Just found a local Curvy advertised cheap as it needs some minor jobs doing :???: Bought it there and then ;) Went to view it expecting a bit of a dog, the bike has a bent lever and gearchange on one side, dented exhaust can on the other. Tyres are past their best, chain is iffy. Some paint flaking from front cylinder, exhaust downpipes shabby but solid. The best bit - the previous owner replaced the plastics with a mint set  Frame is unmarked and looks like it will clean up nicely :p It rides nicely, still has some mot, there is a slight noise at tickover when hot so I'll be checking front tensioner asap. http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/h.../SVcropped.jpg New consumables + clutch lever + gearchange (or straighten the bent one) + new can ( I have a spare Bandit one in the shed ;) ), and I should have a very tidy bike for the summer :smt050 Me a happy bunny :p |

Other info for anyone looking for a bike ;)
Went to view Muzzas Fzr (see above for spec), a very clean and tidy bike - well worth a look - but I'm glad I held back until I found a SV as I really wanted a v-twin  (free bump as it's so clean ;)) Also had a trip to the auctions at Bawtree (Yorkshire) as they had an early pointy listed in their last bike sale. An absolute waste of time for me [-X The bike wouldn't start but still sold for £950 ( £850 + £100 fees) All other bikes in the sale went for lots more than guide prices (Parkers etc). Good fun but I won't be going again  Thanks for all the suggestions and help :smt050 Roll on summer :D |

Collected the bike today and had a better look around it, noticed some bits to add to the rapidly growing shopping list but still happy  Also found braided brake hoses and bling chainguard so it's not all bad news :D Pics to follow... Gearlever needed badly as one on is well bent. Clutch lever needed before MOT in 6 week time ( 2nd hand original would be fine, will look at cheap pattern or Ebay bling http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=159818 ;) ) Front seat has a small rip in the material, is ok but a non-torn seat would be a big improvement. Exhaust can is dented but sound, I have a spare Bandit system that look like it should fit nicely and tidy that area  Rear indicators are mismatched "dinky winker" units ( check spelling ... yep, looks ok ;)), have found a set of 4 used Jap indicators in the back of my shed, 2 look perfect to use as rears :D Front indicator mounting is loose so left indicator keeps falling out of the fairing, will have a look in daylight and can hopefully fix it. Both tyres will be replaced before I start to use it ( expecting to get from Hunters @ Westgate Road or Jacksons @ Bishop Auckland), any suggestions welcome ;) Not sure about the chain & cogs, will use as-is for a while then decide ;) If anyone has any spare bits (North East of possible), let me know and we can sort something out. Now counting the days as I plan to have it sorted and on the road Feb 1st  |
Re: Cheap bike project wanted. SV? Suggestions??
Gearlevers are about £20 on ebay if your needing a one in a hurry.
Clutch levers are £5 at hunters. I'd gaffer tape the seat as get you along, I'd get to Rooster, Joe Joes or the lad in darlo for a 2nd hand 1. I've got no parts kicking around atm Tires have a shop around M&S and hunters are very close on price, fitting is where you'll split them on price. |
