Oil and fuel light questions.
 

earlier today i left the bike ticking over for quite a while.
when i came back to the bike oil and petrol light were flickering, then the temp warning light came on before the radiator fan??
i shut the bike down and then switched the ignition back on and the fan kicked in??

could there be a short in the fan circuit causing the oil and petrol lights to flicker?

oil, petrol and coolant level fine by the way.

Good morning.


A fair few fan issues on Curvy models are due to the location of the fan switch. Being very close to the top of the radiator one doesn't have to have much of a coolant loss before the fan switch isn't actually in the coolant. Obviously, only having a side stand doesn't help, as minimal coolant loss exacerbates the issue.
When you checked the coolant level, did you check the rad & the expansion bottle, or just the bottle?

The fan switch usually kicks in at around 104 degrees C, whereas the temperature light doesn't appear until around 115 degrees C. Which is almost a boil up point. Did you get any bubbling in the expansion bottle after switching the engine off?

On the last bike we did that had similar symptoms to yours it turned out to be one of the head gaskets.

It's never a good idea to leave an engine running un attended. I recovered a BMW R1100 recently where the owner had left it running for so long the oil inspection window had melted & fallen out! Needless to say the engine was scrap!:D

No just bubbling in the radiator, im guessing the fluid level was low to start with. oops!
is there a way to check the fan is working without getting the bike up to the temp required for it to come on
?

If you un plug the fan switch & bridge the connections on the loom side of the plug using a suitable device (bit of wire, split pin etc). Then switch the ignition on, the fan should cut in.

Ive a similar issue after turning the ignition on before starting the bike my oil and petrol lights ignite. is this caused by turning the ignition on whilst on the side stand or indictive of a possible electrical fault. The bike was previously off the road fora couple of years and I only got the bike yesturday. any help oe enlightenmen on this minor niggling issue would be grately appreciated. also the lights go out once the bike is started. thanks once again in advance, Macristo

The oil light should come on when the ignition is on and the engine off - there isn't any oil pressure when the engine isn't running which is precisely what the light is there to tell you about.

The fuel light commonly flickers on briefly when the ignition is switched on, it's quite normal.
