Cam chain noise when turning off choke?

I know cam chain tensioners have been covered several times I just want your thoughts on this;

When I start the bike on choke the engine is nice and quite but when I take it off choke I get the cam chain rattle - but not all the time..... Does anyone know why this would be? Also when riding along it doesn't make that clicking noise. Why does this only happen on tick over?

Thanks

Re: Can you help?

Is your idle speed high enough? It should be around 1300-1400rpm, if it's too low all sorts of things will rattle.

Are the carbs reasonably well balanced? When on full choke any small imbalance will be effectively masked by the extra mixture flow, but once off choke imbalance will cause uneven running at idle which tends to make things rattle more (gearbox/clutch internals etc)

Re: Can you help?

Thats a really good point and one I thought of.... I think I might buy a carb balancer and check this first before buying a CCT.

I guess if it was set lower than the rear then it could be slightly stalling therefore making a noise i.e. chain slapping due to not enough momentum.

Thanks
