Rattly camchain tensioner.

Well after a year of listening to my 99 curvy's front cylinder having the chirpy rattle of a CCT failing (or worse) I have given up on playing Russian roulette with every single ride and finally, finally replaced the bleeping thing with a brand new K3 CCT and they are not cheap! I had a good look around and just couldn't get a second hand one. They come in two parts from Suzuki, yes two parts! One is the CCT the other is the bolt to hold the spring in, why two parts? The bolt cost around a fiver on it's own! All together it was about 65 quid for a new one with gasket, CCT, bolt and crush washer. I think it was worth it in the end and the silence (if there is such a thing with a twin) is golden.

They are very different and much simpler in design, I think a Suzuki designer bod had an epiphany on the K3 one tbh.

Re: Is that a death rattle you have there sir?

Mine's been rattling for 40k miles. I worried about it at first, swapped them about, even stripped a rattly one down to parts and there was no risk of slippage from worn parts. Just a rattly sleeve.

Then I found out Zoran @TWF had a pic of one in bits pointing at the part that rattles in normal use and I could have just done a search and saved lot of hassle.

When you took the old one out was it obvious what was wrong with it?

Mines a tad noisy, I took mine out when doing the clearances and it seems to be working fine, self adjusting and wasn't able to push it in by hand. I should really check my rear too.

Off to look for that now, ty.

Well I did the clearances last last spring and they were fine, threads round here somewhere. And no it wasn't obvious at all what was wrong with the CCT when out, it's why I refitted it again last year as it seemed to have no play in it as all compared to a pair of curvy ones I got off ebay so I never fitted them. I just got a bit worried about it and felt that the second hand ones I have would be as bad or worse so finally went for the K3 one and it's just such a better design. I was a touch worried I had the Neeja problem of a broken blade or something so wanted to be sure hence the new one but I would have taken a second hand k3 one as it's just obvious if they are working or not compared to the old style. I now have three old ones :-)

By the way YC I still have that knackered old tank in my garage if you want it still.

They look very robust to me, and its hard to see how they can fail other than coming to the end of there adjustment after many many miles.

I'm interested in trying to quiet them down though, I might buy a cheapo one to take apart and have a look.

They don't fail- or rather if they do it's nowt to do with the noise- but the rattle got on my nerves so I fitted K3 ones to mine, not convinced it's a better design but it's quieter at least.
