calling Miss YC or anybody else that knows about animals

The sun is out so Im doing the usual thing and messing about in the garden.I have been looking at the final patch of long grass that needs attacking and thought now would be a good time to start.CHOP CHOP go the shears and then out pops 4 inches from the tail of an Adder ,whilst the head shoots off through the hedge.
Point one...will it survive?
Point two...whats the chance of the kids getting bitten(3 more are still in the grass)?
Grief do I feel real guilty as the tail is still squirming about:(

No idea whether it will survive, sorry.

In most places they'll scoot off at the first sign of people, so I'm surprised you manage to see three and a half of them. If it was my choice, I'd be looking for a nice big stone, or a clear patch in the grass where they could sun themselves in the morning. Then teach the children to watch but not touch.

From NHS Direct:

Adder bites can be painful but they are rarely serious. About 7 out of 10 adder bites only result in pain and swelling in the area that has been bitten. Since records began in 1876 there have only been 14 reported deaths as a result of adder bites, with the last death occurring in 1975.
Severe cases of adder bites are unusual, but they can be treated effectively in hospital using anti-venom medicine.

sorry Chris but i'm not fond of snakes mate-brother in law was in the garden in his house in rural thailand two weeks ago and saw something out the corner of his eye moving near the shed where they keep the fish food, he thought it was a rat but it turned out to be a cobra, they never killed it but removed it was removed to somewhere else-f-that

Aye but cobras do tend to kill you whereas the article you just referenced the girl was recovering well. Hells teeth, people keel over and die from getting stung by wasps just to bring a bit of perspective into it.

Ironic coming from someone that didn't want someone else asking for money for a rabbit  (just pulling your leg :-P )

Adders are timid creatures and as keith_d says, they don't like being near people much so what is was doing in your garden I don't know. You must be really out in the sticks. Perhaps with this recent hot weather we've had it's made them more confident, spending more time basking out in the sunshine. I'm not a snake expert but I would think it's chance of survival would depend on how much tail you lopped off and how much blood it will lose. They don't grow back though as far as I know.

Any adder that bites a human usually does so because it's been stepped on, they are so well camouflaged it's not hard to do.
