Oil usage question.

How much oil should a curvy burn? I assumed none but ever since I got my curvy I have to top the oil level up on a regular basis.

It is high mileage (nearly 50k) but I had it on the dyno recently and it was making 67.4 bhp and the dyno guy never mentioned anything about the emissions showing evidence of burning oil?

It seems to burn motul oil quicker than halfords motorcycle oil?

Re: Oil question

I'd expect an engine of that milage to loose some oil BC, everything's going to be worn so tolerances aren't going to be tight.

Re: Oil question

I was using Motul oil for the most part of last year, and my 30K mile sv seemed to go through a fair bit.

Now running Rock oil and there seems to be less used since January when I started using it.

Not really a proper experiment, but will keep my eye on it.

Is there a Motorcycle oil you can get for high mileage engines?
I know it's not a proper fix as an engine rebuild but would be handy if there was?

Just how much is it burning? Some SV engines will burn a fair bit and some will burn none at all. If it needs topping up at every petrol stop then be concerned, every few hundred miles and it should be ok. IIRC Suzuki reckon a litre per 1000 miles is 'acceptable', but could not find the reference.

What are we talking cost wise? Topping up between services or every tank of fuel. Some engines when worn will burn oil when filled up to the mark and when it has settled down to half way between high and low reduce consumption dramatically although not always the case.
As an example my bike, with 43K on the clock tends to burn off oil when filled to the mark but once under the mark can do 3-4000 miles before anywhere between half and low and then 200cc is enough to keep it going till the 6000 mile service and and I do not consider that excessive.

It is roughly every 200 to 250 miles or so? I'll top it up to the top line in the sight glass before a ride and when I get back it's at the low line, it never seems to go past the bottom line though.

It seems to settle at the low mark and never go below that. just worrying that it burns down to there from full in 200-250 miles?

Is it case of some bikes will use more oil than others and some none at all?

Re: Oil usage question.

Try using a slightly higher viscosity oil, something like a 20/50[Make sure it is the right specification] as it should stay a bit thicker and be less likely to splash up the bores,or a different make of oil even, but if it is doing it all the time per tank of fuel it is a tad excessive.
