Ubuntu 11.04, are you a nutty Narwhale ?

Quickly assigned x2 5Gb partitions at the backend of my harddrive, / (root) and /home and installed the latest Ubuntu 11.04, Natty Narwhal. Just to see if its any good.....

Been using it in Classic gnome mode as I want to compare it with 10.10.

I've also installed it on me mum's PC, a pentium D from 2006 to see how it handles older spec'd machines, again just nicking a spare bit of space from the end of her HDD. Amazingly it automatically disabled compiz and ran slicker than Mint 10 that was already on there however it does quickly fill the 512mb memory and then starts to crawl.

First thing the installation process is the normal quick, hassle free situ, applying the correct video modes for you machine.

Main thing it feels slicker more responsive than 10.10 but its hard to quantify. Everything just feels a bit tighter.

I especially like the Aero Snap feature, where 2 windows fill the screen equally just by dragging a window to the edge of the screen and they automatically fill that half of the screen. The loops that you had to jump through to get this working in 10.10 always put me off.

Mum's don't want to know about virus's ! Trying to explain what they are will just give you a headache and your mums eyes will glaze over. My main reason for the switch.

Im currently running 10.10 on my brother laptop. Might have a look at updating at some point... Looks pretty from what I have seen. Got a live USB stick to have a try on to make sure its all good.

I'm running Nutty on my old PC (2 x 2GHz CPUs, 2Gb RAM) and it's working well.

Old PC keith, dual core with 2gb of ram ? That's "high end" for linux PC's. :-D

We've all been suckling on the MS teat for far too long.:notworthy:

For those still unaware of linux "NO Virus's / NO Malware = NO Anti-Virus gumpf - playing on your insecurities !" :geek:

Don't get complacent, they are there just not well distributed yet. I can assure you by the time your mum starts using linux lots of "Bad Stuff (TM)" will be available for it. Most linux distros might be more secure by design, but as always it's the users that will let it down. And there will be plenty of people to cash-in when they do.

PS. I am using 11.04 on my netbook, it is a lot better than 10.10 if you used the netbook remix like I did. However, 10.04 is still the best release by far.

Im sure people will be more interested in the likes of Mac's and winders... but im sure the odd ones will one day become more mainstream.
