Snapped pinch bolt
 
I just got new tyres fitted to loose wheels. Back to the garage to fit the wheels and tightening my front wheel axle clamp bolt and it snapped!!!
Bloody cheap torque wrench. Anyway:

how do I get the snapped bit outta my fork? I've really ****ed up thread before by drilling but need a solution.

has anyone got a part number for the bolt or can you tell me is it m8 or m10. I can't tell.

That's me off the road again, great.

The only way I can think of is to drill a fine pilot whole in the centre of the bolt and use one of those bolt removal tools that has a reverse tread and bites into the snapped bolt and unscrews it.

Drill through from back. If you are lucky drill will bind and unscrew it for you.

This is why feel is more important than torque wrench.

http://www.cromwell.co.uk/KEN0751160K and work well (saved my ass at work many times). go careful starting the drill hole (so hole is as close to centre), not sure what grade those bolts are.

Cheers for the advice. I tried drilling out a snapped bleed nipple on my caliper a few months back, didn't go well new caliper was bought. I just don't wanna mangle my fork. I suppose I'll just have to try it. Is there somewhere that sells these kits like B&Q or Halfords or somewhere. I don't wanna wait till Saturday for delivery.

I know robh539 has recommended screw extractors but if you break one which is quite easy, then you are looking at spark erosion to get it out because its hardened. And also for it to work it would have to go in from the front of the fork which will be difficult.
Start the hole with a center punch and if possible use a centre drill to start the hole. Use good quality sharp drills and don't start too small or it will probably break. I would start with a 4 mm at least. As mentioned drill from the rear face. With care it will come out.

Once you have a deep enough hole screw in a self tapping screw, as the threads is not locked in the fork it will probably loosen and unscrew it. You might be surprised how easy it comes out.

The bolt on the curvy is 8mm ISO fine. Tapping size is 7mm so don't drill larger than that. If you do have problems then you could have it drilled out larger and re threaded or have it helicoiled. Good luck. Check out you torque wrench the bolt should not have snapped at 23Nm.

No you might be right, just looked at it. didnt take it out, coarse thread would be right for ally, so check before buying, If I have time ill remove the bolt and check.

Warmshed is right an by the sound of it used the extractors a few times too lol. Follow his advice in drilling. Sorry for the short post earlier was at work.

If you use the extractor and feels like too much torque (stress) and the stud is not moving stop it will sheer then ya stuffed. Fing some that taps threads they will have the feel and sort you out.

Put thoughts of those vile extractors out of your head - the damn things are a menace.
