We did one at school where you mixed a liquid and powder in a test tube. You then kept your thumb over the lid for a bit, then put a lit wood splint in and the gas created would make a loud pop. However my mate and I 'accidentally' got the measurements wrong. He held his thumb over the test tube as best he could, which I think only made things worse as that thing erupted like Mount Vesuvius! We were left covered in a rusty liquid, as well as the ceiling and half the area around us!
