Is it true that....

A certain percentage of motorways and duel carriageways has to be built straight (say 1 mile in 5 for example) so that they can be used as runways in emergencies, or have I been had?

Between June 1988 & April 1992 I was stationed at 2 RAF camps in Germany.

I remember being told that some German autobahns were designed so that if those pesky Russians bombed our runways then the autobahns could be used.

Dunno if this was true or if I too was was having my silver dangly bell chain pulled........................

GRH, I was at Bruggen from 1984 to 1987 and I heard similar. Infact, I know for sure that the road leading into Ramstein has been used as a runway. Also the M54 had Jaguars taking off from it before it opened.
Years ago there was an "op" to ascertain what roads and tunnels could be used for take off and landing and using the tunnels as cover.

Aint that because of the Airshow disaster?

I do know Elvington is still a Ministry of War ready to use airfield.
Useless fact of the day East Fortune airfield now a (Museum and race circuit) is listed as the race track area. The concrete blocks are Grade 1 listed

Sweden is definitely the same. The Saab Viggen was designed as a STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) aircraft so that it could use sections of road rather than airfields

That was true.
The Swedish military are a very very very well armed Guerilla (in name with the training they have) army with a serving core of men
