Verbal Reasoning 11+ Help - Please.

Oh wise org, my daughter has the kent selection tests when she returns to school in September and needs a bit of help with Verbal Reasoning, well more practice than help.

She loves having some computer time, so if there are any games or interactive sites where she can practice this that would be great as she'll see it as a game and not education.

A quick google search turned up a few results, but it is stuff like forming different words from two other word type questions she really needs practice with which I haven't found much of.

Ta muchly.

I know it will possibly be too much like school but you would be better going for one of the many tutorial groups providing this sort of thing. Although you are probably too late to get into one by now.

A lot of parents will have gone down this route so this is your competition. There are only so many places and getting the grade does not guarantee the school you want so it's become big business in the areas that still have the 11+ or 12+. It is around Bucks anyway so you're not likely to get the best tuition for free over the net.

And before anyone kicks off about the extra tuition being cheating think on - there will always be pushy parents willing to do it and you have to give your child an equal footing.

And please do not kick off the tired debate about the rights and wrongs of grammar schools...

My daughter really wants to do her selection tests as she wants to go to our local grammar school so she is pushing us.

We couldn't find any tutor groups, so we are paying £30 an hour for a tutor once a week and have been since she expressed an interest in going to a grammar school. It IS very expensive and we cannot really afford £120 a month, but if it helps her achieve her goal then I would rather go without something and give her the best chance possible, actually it is almost equal to the petrol costs of getting to work which is another reason for my current cycling 5 days a week.

Was just looking for some additional stuff she could do online whilst on school holidays.

My parents made me do VR to try and get me into a grammar school. Their method was buy crud loads of VR practice papers and I was made to practice practice practice!

Practice makes perfect, and the more your daughter does the better she will become. I know it sounds obvious but VR is so very straightforward, and I remember even thinking this as an 11 year old. English was always my weak point, but after a while I really got the hang of the word puzzles.

Just buy crud loada packs from whsmiths (or they must have CD's these days) and just get your daughter to do 'em over and over again. It worked for me, bagged maximum marks :-), tedious but I guess was worth it in the long run
