IT contractors and Umbrella companies

I know there are a few IT types on here so I thought I would see if anyone on here can help.

I have just been offered a job, job sounds good and they pay is double what I am on now, however the job would be working as a contractor and I would have to set up working through an umbrella company. I have also been told that although the hourly rate is good I wont be guaranteed work every day and I would also have to make my own way to client's sites which would mean paying for my own petrol and as my car only does 25mpg the costs would eat into the wages.

Does/has anyone worked for such a contract?

What are the benefits/downsides

Thanks

Been there, done that, used Orange Genie (who were very good)

Right, Umbrella Company or not, you are going to be paying National Insurance from both sides - Employers AND Employees, as well as Income Tax.

You wont get paid holidays, or sick days (I think you can claim for Statutory Sick Pay, but its nothing compared to your normal rate - so look at it as a day's pay lost everytime you are ill.

What I am trying to get at is, would it be worth leaving my current job, which is still through a contractor, but I am employed directly buy them and take what is in reality a temp job. I know ultimately I am the only one who can make that decision but I am tempted to go for it, but don't want to end up with no work and a mortgage to pay.

You say there is no guarantee of work, and you mentioned the mortgage.

I think you know the answer.

I have not employed any contractors for over 3 years, project budgets have gone. My advice is that if your current placement is secure, stick with it.
