Would like to ask for pay rise but my letter writing is crap

Would like to ask for pay rise but my letter writing, any good kind soles willing to tweek my letter as i know its not quite right but cant put my finger on it.

"Having been at the company for 5 years and gained experience, confidence and qualifications which I am deeply grateful for giving me the chance to do so, I would like the opportunity to discuss the possibility of reviewing my salary.

I enjoy coming to work with a positive attitude and hope that I can help the company move in the right direction. I would also hope that I may be able to gain further experience in aspects of the company that I currently have not been involved with. I'd be grateful if we could speak regarding the above when you are next available.

I have included a copy of my qualifications gained through collage for your reference.

Best wishes"

Run a spell check, your final sentence says collage not college, is that point really necessary? not sure what market you work in but I'd imagine it's the experience that warrants the pay rise not what got you the job in the first place.

Is this not something that'd be better to do face to face with your line manager? You'll need to understand what the market wage is for your role a bit better. They won't just give you a pay rise if it's out of market. I also think it's best to be objective - why do you want a pay rise? are you buying a house / starting a family etc etc

Yeah i would not send that letter, your more likely to get a pay cut than rise, pay rises are done face to face, and you need to come up with reasons why you are worth it above other employees, also best to search for similar jobs and see what they pay. you may even have to find another job, IE, letter of employment from another firm to force their hand, because if they say no, sometimes it's better to move on.

Ask for opportunities within the company to expand your experience. You may not get a payrise straight away but showing a wish to better yourself is a good way of showing the management that you are worth keeping and possibly promoting. Do it face to face and don't wait until your annual appraisal - they're frequently rubber-stamp exercises and your salary will be decided beforehand.

Good luck.

You should go and talk to your boss. Explain how you feel say that you would like to better yourself and then ask what you have to do to earn a salary increase.

Sending any letter asking for a payrise IMHO is going to get you precisely nowhere. IMHO.

A Pay Rise! You know we are in an economic slump. I have just had my 1st in 5 years and i work of a large international company, and then that was on 2%.

But what Fizz said, and Keith Seconded. Also bribary goes a long way :)

Good luck

Tried something similar following a review a couple of years back, ended up making me feel really quite worthless and crap. Its amazing how much stuff managment can make in to reasoning when it suits them.

Fizz's advice seems very logical, dont ask for more money - instead ask what you can do in order to earn more.

The best way to get a pay rise is to get another job offer, for more than you're paid now, and then see if your current company will match it. If you're worth keeping, then they'll almost certainly offer you a raise. Of course, if you can't get a competing offer then you probably aren't good enough to earn more!

Just started a new short contract with a company I've worked for before. End of first week happens to be end of calendar month so my invoice went in last Friday. Got a phone call from admin saying I'd made a mistake, and I was £1 out. "Oh well it's only a pound" said I, "Yes but £1 an hour adds up " they said!

They've upped my hourly rate by £1 and hadn't told me! Beer time!

(No, I'm not saying what the hourly rate is! )
