There's a first time for everything...

Friday evening about 8.15pm it was overcast but still light, I was 'progressing' down Blackbird Lane from Wembley towards the Neasden roundabout (where it joins the A406). Another long day at work, and I'd popped to Asda on the way home, so my rucksack was laden with shopping, and was about 5 mins from home.

At the bottom of the hill I saw a guy in a flourescent jacket leaning against a wall...my thought process was:

- Oh, it's a copper!
- Oh no, it's just a security guard outside SureGuard
- He must be waiting for someone to pick him up
- Yeah, waiting for a lift, he's stood up...his lift must be behind me..
- Oh bugger, he's stepped into the road flagging me down

At that point my first impression rang true, policeman...and then I saw the Met 4x4 on the other side of the road (I'd been concentrating on my outside lane in case anyone jumped into my lane.

As I pulled over, two thoughts crossed my mind -

1. How fast did I come down that hill?
2. I hope he doesn't whisper, I've got my headphones in :-s

He just said hello, and rapped his knuckles on my dark visor saying, "It's getting a bit late for that". I came up with the ingenious reply of, "Is it?" :-s

I said, "I've got my clear visor in my bag" (under loads of shopping so I was hoping he didn't ask me to prove it, or there would have been cat food, bottles of shampoo and cartons of milk all over the footpath, before I'd even got to the spare visor).

His reply?

"Oh, ok then, off you go, have a safe journey and a lovely evening"

After years of wearing one, it's my first time I've ever been asked about my visor including when I've worn it on a Met BikeSafe, and when I was stopped by a bike cop for speeding and given a serious telling off.

Thank goodness for common sense and chirpy coppers :)

The Asda opposite the town hall? I work in the Town hall. If you are around during the day, pop in for a cup of tea :)

That's the one, opposite Brent Town Hall. I can just imagine the scene:

Receptionist: Hello, can I help you?
Me: Yes, I'm popping in for a cup of tea with Viney.
Receptionist: Who?
Me: You know, the fella dressed as a superhero - skin tight red suit and an eye mask (or that may just be his avatar).

Anyhoo, if ever you pop into that Asda and see a filthy black K4 next to the cycle barriers, it's likely to be mine ;)
