Recommend me an alarmed lock for a discless bike
 

Hi all,
After taking my TS out for a ride yesterday, I wasn't comfortable leaving it parked up outside my ex's house, whilst ferrying her from her mums and back in the car.....

Now seeing my TS has 6v electrics, an alarm is kinda out of the question. So, I thought about an alarmed lock of some kind. All the ones I've seen are disclock types, which I could use the padlock type ones but they'd have to be used with a chain.

Anyone had any experience with these, any that you'd recommend, or avoid.

It has spoked wheels?(or am i thinking of wrong bike) , so u could always use the disc lock through the spokes it will do basically the same thing :)

+1. Not cheap but pretty effective and very heavy duty. Xena also do a chain which you can attach some of their disc locks to so the chain itself becomes a movement sensitive alarm. Handy as you can then use on any bike! ALWAYS use a bar reminder thingamajig as so many people forget to remove bolt on security and damage their pride and joy.

The Xena U locks are great locks, nice big and heavy duty as a deterrent. The alarm is not too good tho IMHO. Mine spazzed out and randomly went off. I don't think I'd even had it a year. Changing the batteries didn't sort it. There was a loose piece rattling about somewhere in the alarm module. Next thing the small catch that secures the lid to the battery compartment broke. Attempting to bodge a fix to this proved impossible so I gave up and stopped using the alarm function, and just used the lock as the great U lock it is. My bike has a Cyclone alarm anyway.

Replacement alarm modules for the U locks don't seem as readily available as the ones for the disk locks the last time I looked. Order from a dealer vs simply buy easily online. That situation may have changed.

Other minor niggles:

The stainless steel they use isn't perfect. I've got some slight rust under plastic coating of the U. It could a speck of swarf from something else that got under there during manufacture maybe. The rest of the lock is still fine in that respect.

Niggle 2: You may have to jiggle about with the large locking end piece before you can turn the key on the lock. If you push it all the way home the key wont turn. So pull it back out a bit until it will. No problem once you're used to it, but this can make using the alarm function a pain, since to arm the alarm you have to lock-unlock-lock again fairly quickly. If the end piece moves a tad during the process so you don't get the second lock in time, you'll have to repeat it to arm the alarm.

Other than the above gripes I'd still buy another just as a heavy duty "try and bolt crop this" U lock.

Admittedly I did have a fault in my alarm module after ownership for just under a year. However Xena sent me a brand new replacement unit and seal kit (with new battery too) within a few days so their customer service is pretty good.
