SV650 - shooting 12 inch flames out of exhaust?
:) Hello everyone,
Newbie to this site - so I will use this oportunity to introduce myself and ask a question at the same time if thats ok? :p Not really sure if I qualify as an SV owner as I only used the engine from a 650 - let me explain: I recently bought a suzuki SV 650 engine 2000/2001 - sorry dont know the specific model. This was just under 700 pounds - the guy I bought it from had the engine all rigged up on a trolley, fuel tank, battery, clocks, running beautifully. Sounded sweet as a nut when I revved it up to about 4000 RPM. This was the case until I employed a local car mechanic to install the 650 into my sidewinder buggy. It now shoots 12 inch flames from one cylinder and one of the down pipes glows hotter and redder than the surface of the sun :( He has had my buggy for 7 months ( we agreed that he would work on it as and when to keep the cost down) and now wants to charge me 500 pounds for fitting the engine - he wants me to take the buggy away as is - flames shooting and all! He claims to have done nothing wrong during th3 fitting - clearly he has and Im no engine wizard. Im absolutely gutted :smt022as all my project money has now run out and I was so looking forward to using the off-road buggy round the new tracks that have just opened near me. Any advice/comments/ideas good or bad would be very much appreciated. :(:(:( Cheers Steve :( |

Can't help you solve it but if you find out how to do the flame shooting without the glowing pipes do let us know. It sounds brilliant!

Re: SV650 - shooting 12 inch flames out of exhaust?
You don't say what the exhaust fitted is, how long it is, silencer , position, cooling air flow, made from, etc. Also is the stock airbox + filter used?
Does the engine run correctly apart from flames. Idle speed, pick up etc? Loading on engine, gearbox, final drive ratio and method? Photos and diagrams at all? |
Re: SV650 - shooting 12 inch flames out of exhaust?
sounds like one cylinder is getting too much fuel, which isn't being fully burnt on ignition, and its being ejected on the exhaust stroke, and then igniting on the hot exhaust pipe.
So my guess and its only a guess, is that the fuelling is wrong, maybe one carb has got bigger jets? |
Re: SV650 - shooting 12 inch flames out of exhaust?
Hi, not got to the test drive stage yet as ithe buggy is still in the fitters garage, the exhaust is standard as far as i can tell, it has been re-routed, but there is no acute bends or tight turns in it, it has been shortened by 5-7 inches, the silencer and baffle are still fitted, the only mod to the cooling system is the the flow-return pipes are longer by 3 feet, the rad is mounted behind the drivers head and in free flowing air stream. 2x K&N air filters fitted, engine sounds a bit fast on tick over, revs up ok, the flames and red hot down pipe start happening after about 20-30 seconds of running, and maybe 2-3 blasts on the power, the funny thing is, when it was on the trolley, it was perrrrrrfect, the fitter says all he has done is transfer the engine on to the buggy frame, would a good tune up help?, the fitter has fogot to connet the rev counter, he seems to think it will help if he connects it up, as it goes via the ignition, i'm not so convinced myself, is he giving me some flannel, or is this a possibility??

Re: SV650 - shooting 12 inch flames out of exhaust?
A tune up is in order, as 12 inch flames suggest over rich mixture on that cylinder

Re: SV650 - shooting 12 inch flames out of exhaust?
A fuelling issue does sound like the culprit, assuming both cylinders are sparking consistently.
Sticking choke on one carb is worth a check too. If everything's been re-routed it's possible the choke cables have got stuck in a funny position. There's a y-piece where the single choke cable splits to 2 can be a point where one cable gets caught. Jambo |
Re: SV650 - shooting 12 inch flames out of exhaust?
Why has it got two air filters?I suspect your problem may be an intake air leak or ill fitting airbox which can cause all sorts of running issues.

Re: SV650 - shooting 12 inch flames out of exhaust?
It actually sounds like the cylinder is not getting enough fuel and is running extremely lean.....
More air and less fuel causes a greater detonation and running HOT!! Also rev counter runs off one of the coils and connecting it wont change anything apart from the rev counter working. Check for an air leak between one of the airfilters and carbs or the carb and the engine inlet (there is a pipe that comes off one off the engine inlet is that connected?) Cam timing can also cause this and burnt a out inlet valve. I wouldnt run the engine till you find out whats up with it you risk melting something. |
Re: SV650 - shooting 12 inch flames out of exhaust?
Btw running rich will result in a cool engine
