rust in tank
 

While awaiting for a stag doo to start the other day i decided to take the fuel tank off and change the fuel filter.

to my dismay i found there to be some rust in the bottom of the tank. Very small but there none the less. I drained the fuel, gave it a whipe out and got most of it out. fitted a new fuel filter (the old one was full of rusty fuel! it was like red!) so i kind of expected it to be much better with all this clean fresh fuel in it but ive noticed no difference. tbh there wasnt a problem before but with the red fuel i was kind of expecting something.

Sooo

with an issue such as this is it worthwhile checking anything else? also is it worthwhile sealing the tank to prevent any further rust or are there drawbacks to this? is it just a fact of life?

There are no drawbacks on sealing a tank you just need to make sure the sealing kit supports Ethanol too, most modern kits do.

This, the US kits seem to be the best as theres big problems with the ethanol in the fuel rotting old tanks through.

There has also been this lawsuit over ducati's plastic tanks (which have only failed en masse in the US) and the ethanol.

When I bought my bike there was rust around the filler cap hole and I was quite concerned. After a while though and many miles I deduced that it was there as the bike was not getting used enough. It had covered 200 miles in the last year when I bought it and since then (and 4000 miles in since November) I haven't seen any rust.

i didnt see any rust at all untill i took the tank off and fuel plate out!! and mine did 7.5k last year although it does live outside. Think ill seal it over winter.

Is it covered when outside? Is it wishful thinking on my part that my cover will protect against the worst during winter?

Chuck 100ml of isopropanol in with a tank of fuel every now and again, or all the time if you get carb icing (obv rather unlikely on andy's S4 but hey...). I believe it allows the water to mix with the fuel and not sit in the low spots of the tank and cause rust.

I used the POR15 motorbike tank sealing kit on my RGV after it suffered with a bit of rust in the tank. It is a 3 part kit and it is brilliant. The inside of my tank is totally sealed and looks better than new.

It doesn't react with the fuel and doesn't flake away. Awesome stuff.

I never knew that. Where is a good place to buy Isopropanol, I imagine that you don't find it on the shelf in Morrisons? :-dd

eBay. Or some industrial supply type places might have it as a lot of places use it since they banned tric for degreasing.
