Coasting
 

Do you coast, how frequently? Anything majorly wrong with doing it?

I must admit I coast a lot more in my car than the bike, but I'm slowly getting into the habit of coasting the bike too.

Saves on petrol change, and makes gear changes a doddle (more so in car).

Do it a lot on the bike in town speeds up to 40mph.

Build up speed clutch in clutch out for a few secs to get speed again.

I find on motorways it's hard to do as you slow down so fast.

Only when i trying to see how far i cant coast from to get to my drive lol. Or my petrol light is flashing. I do slip the clutch a hell of alot though going round corners/ certain surfaces.

I coast a fair bit on the bike rather than selecting right gear when slowing down, but im trying to get out of the habit.

Nah don't do it, IMO. There is always clutch contact, I don't see how it can possibly make gear changes easier either.

Better to select a high gear that gives an rpm with limited/no engine braking and "coast" through roundabouts and such holding just enough throttle to kill the engine braking.

Coasting in gear saves fuel on injected bikes and cars, not in neutral!

use 4th upwards and below 6ish thou.
I do coast up to lights if my gloves etc are too loose

I don't avocate it at all, but when you got a solid fuel light on in the middle of nowhere, and have no idea how many more miles is left to the next fuel station(0r in your fuel tank)..........and its all down hill to that place.........


Emergency measures come into play, a little coasting in a higher gear, might not make much difference, but possibly makes you feel less nervous........I can't push a big bike for miles, makes you out of puff!

Not if the engine braking is consuming all the energy.

That's the idea, you trade momentum/gravity potential to overcome the engines friction, thus the ECU doesn't need to squirt any in to keep the engine turning.

Even with a carbed bike the amount of fuel used at low rpm and throttle position is absolutely bugger all.
