Advice please, job related
Don’t know what to do. Some advice please. Ok my lass used to be a vet nurse. She took a job a whileago over in Preston and although the job was ok it was a 150 mile commute sorealistically 2 years down the line she was knackered. Shes moved jobs to becloser to home and decided to take up a lecturers position teaching animal careand other such things. Its her dream job but things havnt turned out asplanned. Basically she is now working (along with 4 other girls, no blokes orother staff) to teach 90 students in the middle of the roughest area of Bradford.they have just pulled the security from the college as well as the caretaker sothey are basically on their own. My lass is teaching students that have prettyserious criminal convictions (gbh, assaulting pc etc) and apart from not havingany training or support to help/deal with these people doesn’t have any help orsupport herself. Now im seriously worried about her but im not sure what todo. Do I just get her to walk out? (obviously we have bills etc and im not surehow we can cover them but I guess we will) or what. Shes not too happy aboutthe whole thing but im really worried. Weve raised the issue with the collegemanager and they have just said “well we just have to get on with it” im notsure this is acceptable and weve spoken to the people that do the budgets andthey say they have no money for security. Bearing in mind there has beenattacks on students this year. Is this acceptable? Am I just getting flusteredabout things? Any thoughts on what to do? How do I get her out of there with norepercussions? |
Re: Advice please, job related
Sounds like something for the Union to take up if you ask me.
Surely theres an ATL branch nearby somewhere? |
Re: Advice please, job related
There are criminals learning animal care?? Odd.
As Tommy says, there is likely to be a Union presence there, so I would recommend becoming a member if she isn't already and push the issue that way, or via the board of governors for the college. I'm surprised that the teachers would be put in such a position in this day and age. Kingston College where I did my apprenticeship had security. West Thames College where I'm currently studying to be a Union Rep also has security. If anyone shows aggression or intimidation towards her she should rightly refuse to teach the individual and have them removed from class. |
Re: Advice please, job related
That's a tough one. In simple terms if anyone feels at risk in a job, and the support from the employer isn't forthcoming, leaving is the only option. However, there's the bills to pay. Raise a formal complaint/greivance so the concerns are formally documented, which will at least enhance any payments should there be an attack. Then start applying for jobs and hope to get out before the inevitable happens.
