Can i ride a trike?
Hi Guys,
So after trawling the internet i'm still a bit unsure if i could ride a trike. I don't know if i actually want one but if i knew i could ride 1 then i would consider it. I passed the DAS last may and i don't have a full car license. If anyone could shine a bit of light on this that would be great. Si |
Re: Can i ride a trike?
I found this after a quick squizz
http://www.trikeshop.co.uk/trike_law.htm According to them as long as it's less than 410kg it's a bike. All looks a bit complicated tho. |
Re: Can i ride a trike?
Yeah i read that lol, but then i also read that what makes it a bit more complicated is that as a bike you can ride upto a weight of 410kg but if its a trike then the weight is upto 550kg any higher than that it then falls into the motor vehicles group.
If this is right then sweet. Can anyone confirm this? |
Re: Can i ride a trike?
In years of yore you could ride a trike on a provisional license......has it changed?, the old grey matter isn't what it used to be!

Re: Can i ride a trike?
From the link, If you've passed a full motorcycle test, you will have group "B1" on your licence, although if you haven't passed a car test, you won't have group "B". This creates a bit of an anomaly as your motorcycle can't exceed 410kg, but you could ride a trike up to 550kg, because of your "B1" entitlement. This is worth knowing, as there are quite a few riders who limit themselves to a trike under 410kg without realising.

Re: Can i ride a trike?
Quick answer is 'no' unless you passed your bike test before the rules changed in 2000 then you need a full car licence after that. I contacted the DVLA over this a while ago and this is the reply i got:
Thank you for your email. You must pass a category B driving test in order to drive a three wheel vehicle. It is no longer possible to drive such a vehicle on the strength of a motorcycle driving licence. Regards Graham Williams www.direct.gov.uk/motoring hths :) |
