Recommend me a decent screwdriver set
Always bought stanley screwdrivers but don't like the look, feel or quality of the current stuff - Fat Max - really!
Seen these on fleabay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FACOM-ANW-...item231470c88d Anybody tried these? Any recommendations? Price of Facom set at £40 for 10 seems about right for me. |
Re: Recommend me a decent screwdriver set
I have these, got them free with a gallon of oil, but even for a tenner, they are a bargain.
Halfords Advanced Professional 8 piece Screwdriver Set |
Re: Recommend me a decent screwdriver set
Facom wins every time for me, had a set for over 10 years, mine get used a lot in my every day work and abused.
I also have the ones ralph linked to which I use at home, they ain't bad either. |
Re: Recommend me a decent screwdriver set
Tools can be expensive if you are not using them in a professional capacity and the Halfords Pro stuff is more than adequate for anything less

Re: Recommend me a decent screwdriver set
Facom bloody better be good! Just googled for them as I need a new set of pliers, saw the price of a 10 piece screwdriver set, and now there's chilli con carne all over my laptop.

Re: Recommend me a decent screwdriver set
The old stanley stuff was excellent with really hard/tough heat treated tips, the new stuff is no where near the same quality. I am not willing to pay for snap-on but am still looking for some decent gear. I have a full range of 1/4, 3/8 & 1/2" Halfords socket sets and ratchet spanners but not impressed with the screwdrivers.
I think £4 a screwdriver is a fair price so am quite willing to pay £40 for a set of 10. Just don't have experence of Facom tools and wether thhey are of a better quality than halfords/stanley sets. Really hate when screwdrivers lose the corners of the tips at their first stuborn fastner. I would buy Craftsman if I could get them over here, bought loads last time over in the states, their proffessional range is excellent and was really cheap when it was $2 to the pound. Got a set of 6 wall drive metric sockets brought over in the summer - they are brilliant, even got their sizes in large print on the side! brilliant for identifying when laid on your back under a motor. |
Re: Recommend me a decent screwdriver set
In fairness, ive abused my facom screwdrivers something rotten and have wrecked a lot of the blades, 7 piece set, even used them as chisels lol
But i recently reground the flat blades and are fine again, good for another 10 years. I would defo buy another set. |
Re: Recommend me a decent screwdriver set
i like the draper 'cabinet' screwdrivers. i have had one of the pz1 green handled ones for years and it has done 1000's of screws and is still serviceable with only a little sign of wear to the tip, i have used it that much all the markings on the handle are completely missing. only problem with them is they are crap if your hands are slippy as you cant get a purchase on the handle.
top tip: get a small tin of fine valve grinding paste and dip the point of the screwdriver in it when you think that a screw might be stubborn. for reliable quality with good grip you can't beat facom. 'you only buy good tools once' |
Re: Recommend me a decent screwdriver set
Facom has become over priced and over rated - look for anything made by AST - an English company. Expensive but superb.
