First proper ride on my SV! Tyre options?
Finally got out for my first ever Solo bike ride today and i absolutely loved it,
Have done 60miles today, and iv just found an excuse to pop out for another 25mile ride tonight! ;) Anywhoo, onto the tyres.... Front is Bin fodder, has a massive step in it and generally makes turning in a very uncomfortable experience! Then i look at the Rear tyre.... 170/60! So that wont be helping it turn in nicely either then! Have found some Maxxis Touring tyres in the correct sizes for £165 fitted, but are there any better options for me out there? I wont be needing a full on dogs danglies sports tyre just yet, im nowhere near ready to be seriously pushing the tyres, so just something capable of dealing with winter and not too pricey would be ok for now! Any recommendations? |
Re: First proper ride on my SV! Tyre options?
Ideally you want to be looking at a sports touring tyre. There are many makes and models out there. It's not about you pushing the tyre, ideally you want a tyre that is going to grip the most in all conditions!!!!

I got BT023 and they're great in all conditions and inspire confidence. Had them now for about 2000 miles and not a hint of square with loads of tread.

From what I've read in reviews the Maaxis are ok
There's a lot of positive comments about Avon Storms on the Org, plus similar about Michilen Pilots I run Metzeler Z6's front and rear and they have been Very Good, track days, normal riding, wet days, I can't fault them. They may have been superseeded by a newer model |
Re: First proper ride on my SV! Tyre options?
Think im gonna give these Maxxis M6029 Touring a blast:

Re: First proper ride on my SV! Tyre options?
£165 fitted for the Maxxis sounds good value. I've always had Avon Storm 2 ultras as they were on my bike when I bought it and I have so far changed them separately. I'm happy with them, but a pair fitted would be more than the Maxxis.

Yeah, the deal is £185 for the tyres, fitting, and my front forks drained and filled with new thicker oil
At mo its set up for a 10st shortarse, and im 6ft 15stone so bit soft for me! |
Re: First proper ride on my SV! Tyre options?
I see if any dealers have got Roadsmarts knocked down as they've just been superceded by Roadsmart II
I can't fault roadsmarts, and they do give you good grip in the wet and dry (do also tell you when they're toast). |
Re: First proper ride on my SV! Tyre options?
I had some of those Maxxis tyres on my Curvy when I bought it. They were a bit twitchy in the corners, squared off pretty quickly and just weren't very confidence inspiring.
+1 for Roadsmarts. I had some Roadsmarts fitted beginning of the year and they are so much better. Much more confidence inspiring, lots of grip in the corners, had no problems with them in the wet and even thought I've done more commuting on the Roadsmarts than the Maxxis, they still haven't squared off yet. |
Re: First proper ride on my SV! Tyre options?
I've got some Pirelli Angel ST's.. they're beaaaaaaaaautiful!! and really confidence inspiring in the wet, and in the warm you don't even have to think about grip
