Engine or Cam Swap thread
 

So i bought that engine. Will upload a photo in the next few days. I now have a seemingly mint 2010 engine with throttle bodies and wiring loom with most of the components attached. Oil rad and header pipes. I don't know the mileage of the engine but the drive sprocket seems close to end of its life, so i guess thats a few thousand miles. Its unlikely to be more than 10K miles.

Sitting next to this shiny engine is my 2001 Curvy with some clutch issues (bit of drag, hard to find first), a small oil leak from behind the front sprocket, and valve clearance adjustment needed.

My original plan was to pinch the cams and clutch out of the 2010 motor and part the rest, but most people i have spoken to have said to put the 2010 motor in my curvy. (Not as savvy as you guys)

So what should i do? Is it a big job to change the motor? Is there a sweet mix of the two i can put together? What do racers do? How involved is the straight engine swap? I saw somewhere about putting curvy carbs on an injected engine.

Im so confused!

Curvy has 30K miles so not so many. And originally i was planning to fix all the niggles. If there is a big demand for 2010 engine spares (apart from intake cams and clutch) just shout or pm as that might help me decide to part the new engine.

Well if you're doing the cams, that sorts the valve clearances (do they need adjusting, or checking?)

A cam swap and fixing your niggles is far less involving than taking off flywheels and side covers, changing intake boots, plugging PAIR systems etc... that's before you even take the engine out. Engine out is not that easy, lots of stuff to trip you up, all it takes is one bolt to snap.

My clearances need adjusting as 3 are out and 3 at least are on edge of spec. I will wait until i have done the cam swap though and remeasure. Will i need to re-time the cams and properly re-fit the camshaft holders to measure the clearances or is there a short cut?

I think im just going to swap the cams and pinch the clutch if it fits. (Will a 2010 clutch fit my curvy?) I was quite interested to see yesterday the new engine had 4 spark plugs. I guess thats for emmisions more than performance.

Also, is this a good guide to follow or do you know of a better one?

You don't really need to retime them to check clearances, but if you're putting them in you might as well put them in the right place.

I think the later clutch should fit. But it sounds as much as your clutch needs adjusting than replacing.
