RAM Upgrade question

I want to upgrade the RAM in my Samsung N510 netbook. Below is a pic of the current module that is in there.

Would this fit?

Or will I need to get this because it's the same speed?

Thanks

Also does anyone know of any good deals on Hard Drives 500gb+

I would go to http://www.crucial.com/uk/ for the memory, rather than ebuyer. You should be able to select the make/model and it will tell you exactly what you can put in the machine.

You won't find any good deals on hard disks at the moment, due to the floods in Thailand. It may be cheaper to buy a USB external disk and take the physical drive out of that, as the prices on them seem to have been more stable recently. Prices on the standalone drives has gone up more due to there being more demand and less supply.

can recommend crucial as well, looking on the site though its says the max amount of RAM you can install is 2GB. might be something worth looking into before you buy the 4GB in you links above:

Cant gurantee but it should be fine, ususaly you can go for the same or faster speed than what you have but specs go further to CAS times and memory layouts that are allowed by the bios in the computer.

As Sudoxe said just go to crucial website as they give 100% gurantee if you choose though using the memory selector for you computer type

Thanks for the input. Looks like I can only upgrade to 2gb. I thought RAM was backwards compatible, you just wont get the faster speeds cause you wont be able to select them in the BIOS.

maviczap, cracking price for a 2TB hard drive but wouldn't that be a 3.5 desktop drive in that enclosure?

Very much depends on what the bios allows as its a laptop you wont have much to fiddle with and it will take the settings that are specified on the memory. Laptops are much more picky about memory than desktops.
Somtimes you can have mismatched speeds and the system will just use lowest speed that you have installed.
Memory is rated UpTo a certian speed, this spec is then written to a chip on the memory module and used by the bios to set all the params as required.

Its all a tricky business.

I checked the N510 can support up to 4GB of ram but only in a single chip as it only has one slot, btw no point installing a x64 OS as after 256Mb thats taken for your graphics you are on the limit for a 32bit OS realy so no need to put an overhead into your system.

Yep, it'll be a 3.5 HDD, but as sudoxe said there is a worldwide shortage of HDD's because of the floods in Thailand, which have wrecked the worlds HDD factories, so don't expect to see any cheap internal laptop HDD's for ages.

Look at an SSD, you can pick up a 120G for abt £130 (OZC Agility 3 or Corsair Force 3 etc) and will make the system fly, i just put a 240G into my laptop and its speedy but yours is a budget system so not sure how much extra gain you will see.

Re: RAM Upgrade question

Thanks. I know it's not the fastest system in the world but that's not the point of a netbook, I carry it around with me all the time and I love it but it can get a little frustrating when you have more than one program running at the time or you are trying to play a flash game, sometimes it can grind along a bit.

I want a larger hard drive so I can fit HD films on it, its currently got a 140gb drive and it fills up all the time. Not sure hoe much difference the RAM and hard drive will make with regards to speed as the single core CPU is a bottleneck.
