Had a thought today...

Uninsured and untaxed drivers really annoy me, particularly when you see them on shows on tv getting a £200 fine and a slap on the wrist etc. I know that makes it harder for them next time with insurance but if they've skipped it once who's to say they won't skip it again.

Anyways since most petrol stations have ANPR to prevent drive offs so why not hook them up to the dvla and refuse petrol to vehicles without tax or insurance? The infrastructure is already there and it'd make life much harder for those not playing by the rules.

Discuss.

I think that's a great idea. While we're at it, can we get a reminder that our MOT is due like we do for tax.

You'd get reminded when they refused to sell you fuel. Two birds, one stone

They have a little sting from time to time at Lakeside in Thurrock. On the top of the slip road off the A13 (heading away from London) they sit at the top with ANPR and confiscate cars. Last time I saw this they had 15 or so cars lined up.

Very good idea. Like it muchly. The only reason I can see why they don't do it is cost + reliability. I'd be mighty ****ed off if my reg plate was a bit dirty, or obscured by the car in front etc. and I couldn't get petrol.

As for untaxed, uninsured pikeys, I often wonder why I bother getting insured or taxed. When you watch these programs, they never go to jail. They just keep getting fined (which they probably don't pay) and get bans when they don't have a license already.

I think it'd be far far cheaper to avoid tax, mot and insurance, and just pay the fines when I get caught.

but there must already be systems in place to deal with that, like cameras from both angles for instance. Not sure of the ins and outs and I dare say there would be ways around it if you were determined but let the coppers pick those ones up same as they do now.

I'm just after making their lives a ball ache so I can drive and ride a little safer.

Problem is sooner or later youd end up with a criminal record, that's ok if you plan on being on the dole for the rest of your life but pretty sure it'd soon outweigh the money you saved!

True, but if you think about it, if you're driving/riding around illegally without paying for tax, mot, insurance, fuel, getting your dole money to pay for your other bills, and probably buying stolen bikes anyway, it's easy living. I exaggerate of course, but they should be making it much harder for these types.

That would have been helpful for hubby who accidentally managed to not have tax (he did have insurance) because the transfers had not been done correctly when he brought the bike, therefore he didn't get tax reminder and didn't notice it was out of date. All sorted now thank goodness.
