Oil weeping from valve cover.
I've recently replaced the engine on my K3 and when I swapped over the damaged valve cover for my old one I replaced the rubber seal. I didn't glue the two half circles though.
Did an oil and filter change today and noticed it has been leaking from the bottom of the front valve cover. Enough to drip down on to the oil cooler and belly pan. It's not really from the two half circles though, more the bottom edge. I thought it might not be seated right, so I took it off and cleaned off the oil. But I just went for a little run and it is weeping again Should I seal it all up with something? |
Re: Oil weeping from valve cover
IIRC I sealed my new one after I put the front wheel through my curvy's

Re: Oil weeping from valve cover
Although I borrowed a mate's tube, didn't realise it was that price (you only need a touch) there may be something cheaper. People will have had experiences with other stuff.
Chap I know just uses kitchen silicone, dunno if that's frowned upon but he's not the sort of bloke I'd follow blindly |
Re: Oil weeping from valve cover
Took the covers off mine today to do the 30k tappet check and they had a very thin layer of sealant applied to the flat face only. Would imagine its just normal gasket sealant, make sure you torque to spec. as that sorted the leak I had on the clutch cover, it was much lower than I would have given it.

Re: Oil weeping from valve cover
clean all mating surfaces with 'spirit' then lightly smear some instant gasket on rubber mating faces.
i would check that there is no grooves, chips or bits on any of the surfaces. might be a good idea to check the straightness of the cover/head mating faces with a steel rule. |
