Drinking diet fizzy drinks?
I used to drink a lot of regular fizzy drinks, and having an urge to lose a bit of excess weight I switched to diet drinks as I can drink up to 2 litres a day.
However, having just read.. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/ar...d-to-food.aspx I think I may be switching the Coke Zero for something else. |

i have been telling people for years no to go near the stuff but everyone thinks i wear a tinfoil hat.
stop drinking fizzy drinks and drink fruit juices (100%). oooohh and another side effect of drinking fizzy drinks with sweeteners, they make you more thirsty so you end up drinking more of them. |
Re: Drinking diet fizzy drinks?
A bit of a biased article particularly the bit about it being three chemicals when its clearly just one. If we got concerned about all methylester containing products both natural (fruit, all vegetable oils and wines for starters) and synthetic we would have to avoid a lot of foods. But it also highlights the dangers of MSG. Phenylalanine is in nearly all chocolates as well. The methylester group is were the methanol comes from.
Must also be in beer cos something make my better half irritable and its not me. Slightly off topic but there is no requirement in the UK to list the ingredients in beer, wines and spirits, perhaps its time there was. |

Another link. http://www.sweetenerbook.com/aspartame.html showing structure.
There's plenty of info out there. On a personnel note I try to avoid it and MSG among others so I buy almost nothing preprepared or ready cooked. Its very difficult to avoid all food additives you only have to look how very red most meat is and how bright green tinned peas are as two of many examples. |

Re: Drinking diet fizzy drinks?
All fizzy drinks are not good for you, so drinking 2 litres a day is a big no no.
I have a mild case of irritable bowel syndrome, i have to keep an eye on what I eat and drink, some foods and drinks in excess are a trigger to bad guts for me. Fizzy pop is something I can't drink much of, I generally have a glass of coke zero a day ( not everyday I must add, sometimes none), this I can cope with. I drink more cordial tbh. There is defo some grey areas around the health damage that some sweeteners can do, a lot of products in America that use sweeteners have cancer warnings printed on the labels. As bib said, unsweetened pure fruit drinks are a lot safer, they may be high in natural sugars but natural products are far more healthy than chemicals and additives. Finally, don't believe all the marketing hype, pepsi max, diet pepsi etc, all the same drink just different labels. |
