Stolen recovered questions.

My mate in work had his car keys stolen from his house and they made off in his car.
He received a payout from the insurance company, and 3 days later receives a call from the police to say the car has been recovered.

Does the car now belong to the insurance company, can he buy it back or does he have to buy it back? Who has to pay the bill for towing and storage at the recovery centre? I take it the car will be a cat d stolen recovered insurance loss now as he has been paid?

The police are not helping at all on the number given as the woman just says to get in touch with the revovery agency (and she can barely speak English) Also the Met website just says to show up to the recovery yard with the v5 and payment, he doesn't want to pay anything.

We have been researching on line for the past hour but not getting anywhere.

Thanks

Re: Stolen recovered

AFAIK it would now belong to the insurance company as they have paid him for the car, so technically it belongs to them. If they have paid him i would assume they would have asked for the V5 and any other documents/keys relating to the car.

Re: Stolen recovered

yup payment has changed hands so its now the problem of the insurance company as they now own the car.

Hooray, just got through to a rozzer who can speak England (yes that was a deliberate spelling error to add comedy value to a boring post) and he was able to explain things.
The only question he couldn't answer was, does my mate get a chance to buy this vehicle back off the insurance company? I can't see why not.

Would look dodgy. "Yes I did receive a substantial cheque from you, now my car has been found I'll give you 90p for it."
Cheers guys, he was just stressing out because the police wouldnt give any help but now we have got through to someone we can understand it all makes sense.

Case closed

My insurance company wouldn't let me buy my car back for that exact reason. They sold it to an auction site who got them top dollar for it. So, it'll probably be down to the individual insurance company, but he won't get it back at a steal (boom boom tshhh!). They'll probably charge him what they paid out.

I'd advise him to go to the pound & have a look at it first - the scrotes that nicked it might have been 'gardening' in the back seat.

My neighbour had a similar situation, when the car was delivered back to his address by an error at the insurance company. They owned it, but delivered it back too. Great, because he then issued a letter to say he will charge them daily to store it and after 2 months chasing them they let him keep it. Double whammy

If the company hadn't paid out and it was found he would have got screwed over with recovery and storage all over bank holiday weekend plus getting a car back that had the tits ragged off it by some bloke in a hoodie.
