Curvy misfiring in the rain.
 

Hey guys, i bought an sv650s yesterday T reg, 99 model. everything was good riding home, out and about on it for a bit all good. drove it to work again all good. but i got in the rain earler, about half an hour ago and the bike went all funny. smoke started coming from it and it just wouldnt accelerate properly. i had to ride it high revs all the way home to stop it cutting out and it was also back firing and riding quite jerky, when i pulled over i put the choke back on a bit and started it, but still cut out untill i put the choke on near full, but even at that it was still sounding terrible and back firing a bit. theres also a clicking like noise coming from near the choke. anyone any ideas? or know whats wrong :(

Common ones are wet spark plugs and seized choke plungers. If it's only happened in the rain , checking the front spark plug would be my first thought.

Go take out the front spark plug, clean it (or replace it ideally) refit it (without overtightening it!, check the manual for the advised gap). I also pack mine (once fitted) with grease to protect from water ingress, picked that tip up off here - it's also highly advisable to have a front mudguard flap (fender extender) , ride it about a bit and let us know. will only take you 30-60 mins.

Does the choke plunger lever feel like it's got proper movement? if the cables snapped it might not be doing anything (although it sounds like it was doing something), it could be seized and only half opening/closing. I don't think it;d behave as dramatically as you describe though.

hey guys, thanks for the replys. done as everyone said, removed the front spark plug, went to halfords bought a new one, fitted it, and the bike has life. so happy :d lol after just getting it yesterday i thought it was all going down hill lol. The old plug came out very very easy and was all burnt looking, wasnt oil, was kinda crispy at parts?

Get some silicone grease(high heat) stuff . And a fender extender . Can remember when i had spark plug wet . Riding a blackpool donkey It was that bad . Common thing is wet spark plug

Make sure the front cylinder drain hole is clear and free from crap. Its a small hole on the rhs and somtimes fills with road muck. HTH :)

A fender extender (a front mudguard extension in English!) should be enough to keep the front plug dry in the rain. I've never used any grease on the front plug, just the extension on the mudguard. I've ridden regularly in the rain, including a number of downpours of biblical proportions, with no problems.

Hey thanks very much for the replys guys :) very helpful and was much appreciated. i'll look into buying a mudguard extension, whers the best place to get them, ebay ?
