Motor differences between SK3 and SK5?
Can anybody give me some advice on a gearbox problem i have? I have lost third gear completely. It seems to locate correctly but there is no drive. The gearbox appears fine other than a lack of third gear and its possible to change up and down freely from first to sixth. Is this a common fault?
My bike is a racebike, can anybody tell me the differences between a K5 and an SK5 as i am not sure which it is and when going online to find prices for a full engine gasket set I am asked to enter the model. Any help would be very much appreciated. |
Re: 2005 SV650 Gearbox problem and model differences
Sounds as if the dogs/teeth for third have gone walkies, particularly if, as you suggest, the gears all select correctly which makes it probable that the selector mechanism is working correctly.
As the SV crankcase is split vertically it's not possible to have a look inside, (or at least not easily - an endoscope can be used), in the manner that you might if it were a more conventional horizontal split design with a separate sump. Engine out and all apart sadly. Gasket wise K5 and SK5 are the same. |

Full split to fix, me and richie detailed this on the site if you search the threads out.

had the same problem two years ago.... i solved it buying a new engine directly: 250 euros for a 8k miles engine!

Re: 2005 SV650 Gearbox problem and model differences
Theres a sunken bolt in the sump that uses a hex head to remove it. (its not the sump bolt) This allows you to bypass a internal 'capture' 'slowing down' area when dropping the oil out of the engine using the normal sump bolt. Its removal creates a hole in the sump around the size of a 50p piece. It up to you if it may be worth removing this and seeing what drops out. The dogs will be around the same size as a piece of chewing gum if the have broken off. My gearbox fix thread has pictures showing what the gears look like & the broken 'bits'

Re: 2005 SV650 Gearbox problem and model differences
Thanks for your help. Just to complicate matters a little can anybody tell me the differnces between an SK3 motor and an SK5?
The reason i am asking is because the motor that i am running is not the original and i am a little unsure whether its from a 2003/2004 model bike or the 2005 to 2007 bike. I have tried phoning a Suzuki dealer but you cannot tell the year of the engine from an engine number. I need to get a full gasket set and the part numbers are different for these year ranges. |

Motor differences between SK3 and SK5
Please can anybody tell me the physical differences between an SK3 motor and an SK5?
The reason i am asking is because I need to strip the motor on my race bike and replace some gearbox parts. The motor that i am running is not the original and i am a little unsure whether its from a 2003/2004 model bike or the 2005 to 2007 bike. I have tried phoning a Suzuki dealer but you cannot tell the year of the engine from an engine number. They can only find parts by chassis numbers and therefore only suuply parts related to the original engine number on the bike. I need to get a full gasket set and the part numbers are different for these year ranges. If anybody could help it would be much appreciated. |
Re: Motor differences between SK3 and SK5
Take camchain tensioner out and see if it has oil feed to it.
AFAIK heads, bases and ancillary cover gaskets are same other than the camchain ones. |
