Curvy electrical fault.
 

How do, the road bike SV650 '99 is currently being a bit of a fecker. The symptoms are as follows. The bike won't start, when the button is pressed all that happens is the dash lights dim slightly. Same thing happens if you switch on the lights or press the horn button. At the same time as the lights dimming the trip computer goes blank and switches back on in a "8888888" then back to normal style as if you've just taken it off the battery and put it back on.

I've tried a spare battery that was fully charge by an optimate beforehand and so far no joy. I've done a basic check through of various connectors from battery to front but so far have found no obvious dodgy connections or made any in roads to the issue. We also tried bump starting it and it sort of ran for a few seconds with the rev counter flying all of the place and it spluttering and coughing but not really any joy.

Any ideas anyone? The answer to this will be met with an eternal debt, i feel like it would be easier to kick it over and throw a paddy right now.

if the battery is pooped you will get weird running issues, start it off a car and see how it goes, seems that it is all pointing to a battery issue or a loose negative connection, check the grounding strap on the back of the engine

What is the volt reading of battery, before, during & after starting?

I had similar symptons with my curvy a while back would turn over a little but not properly, if you put your lights on and turn on your indicators does the dash flicker. turned out to be corrision on the connector just under the seat on the right hand side if you follow the +cable from the battery its the first place that it goes.

If you really are sure of the condition of the battery, as that is a common problem in the circumstances you describe, then identify the lead that goes from the solenoid to the starter motor, remove it at the solenoid. Do the lights still dim when you press the starter button? If no then the starter motor or the lead is faulty.
