Supercharging an SV - has anyone actually done it?
I can see there's plenty of threads on here where the idea of supercharging an SV650 is discussed and claims made that projects are under way.
But has anyone actually, really, honestly done it and been successful? I'm considering supercharging the carbed engine I'm going to fit in my s-pokey-v... http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=179318 |
Re: Supercharging an SV - has anyone actually done it?
Yes we have done this to the sv1000 and found to have great results with British speed records and many class wins, do a Youtube search. We are now starting to compile the parts to build a sv650 with supercharger.

Lower the compression ratio with a thicker base gasket or decompression plate. Modify the end of the crank to project through the engine cover and accept a drive pulley. Modify engine cover to fit a seal around the crank projecting through. Identify a suitable supercharger based on engine rpm/capacity. Mount supercharger. Tap into engine oil circuit to provide oil feed for s/scharger bearings if charger doesn't have a self contained lubrication circuit. Choose pully sizes for crank and charger based when you want the maximum boost to occur. Fit idler pully/belt tensioner. Make inlet plenum - as mine's a carbed engine I'm thinking sealing the carbs in the plenum would be the better bet so you don't have to worry about sealing the butterfly spindles and the breathers can vent in the plenum to pressurise the float bowls. High pressure fuel pump. Boost driven adjustable fuel pressure regulator Retard ignition advance. Fit intercooler. Plumb the hoses in. Set up on dyno. |

Yes you are on the money but we would fit forged pistons replacing the sand cast items which are stock.

I appreciate you may not want to go into much detail if you are looking at supercharging the SV650 with the aim of retailing kits but could I ask a couple of further questions? Would you fit specific low compression forged pistons or regular forged pistons and decompress with thicker base gasket/plate? I'm considering combining the charger fitment with a 700cc big bore at the same time. Have you got a specific charger in mind to fit? My thoughts were turned to supercharging my SV as I found an Eaton M45 charger I'd forgotten I had - it's a big old lump of metal but I think a few hours work with a grinder should lose some weight from it. The M45 is intended for charging production 2 litre 4 pot car engines - SV is a smaller engine but higher revving so it's not a million miles away. I need to sit down with a calculator and the Eaton data sheets and figure out whether it's a goer or not..... |
