PC monitor settings?
 

Help please. What am I missing?

PC about 4yrs old, Win XP, had CRT monitor at 1024x768.

Was given a quite nice LCD monitor.

Right click on desktop, properties, settings to 1280x1024, apply etc, and plugged in LCD and all is well. Restart and it comes up fine.

However when switched off and then back on, PC reverts to 1024x768 and LCD says "out of range". Can't seem to get it to stay at 1280x1024.

What am I missing? Do I need to set it in safe mode?

See if there are any specific drivers for the monitor you can install. Would also recommend updating your graphics card drivers too.

might be the refresh rate is to high.

Monitors get auto detected by the card. It should actually say what monitor it thought it detected, make sure it doesn't still think it has the old monitor installed. I spent lots of times debugging XP monitor detection, early versions where troublesome but the latest service packs with an up-to-date graphics cards driver seems to keep things quite happy.

It would be helpful to know the graphics & and monitor you are trying to use.

My XP had a similar problem. Back in the old days monitors were all 6x4 but now they are mostly 16x9. Problem is the old drivers had no concept of the 16x9 resolutions so fouled them up.

Download the correct driver for your monitor, then next time it boots up try and select it then. If that doesn't work you'll need to update the driver for the graphics card too.

These are both pretty simple things to change although I'd go for the monitor first as 9 time out of 10 it'll fix it. You may need to go into the device manager to force a driver update although the correct driver may well come with a setup.exe which will take care of that for you.

Thanks for the inputs. Seem to have sorted it, updated drivers and selecting a better ratio 1280x768 for the screen gets it to retain the settings on boot up. Cheers folks.

(PS the monitor itself is a "no brand" thing, but with a Dixons label, despite which it looks quite presentable).
