Which car to buy. Help?

Girlfriend buying a new car and can't choose between:

- vw golf 1.6 2005,
- BMW Mini Cooper 1.6 2003
- ford festa 2003 1.4

They all about £3000 and about 50,000 miles. What do you recommend for servicing, reliability and running cost. Also wether I can do work on the car myself to maintain without always using a dealer to reset computer parts.

None of the above.
Get something Japanese like a Micra or Yaris.Ultra reliable so no need to worry about doing work on the car yourself. It wont need any.

Ford Fiesta. Easy & cheap to fix or service. Minimal maintenance needed. Plus i guess its the cheapest road tax out of the 3 too

She don't want micra or yaris. One of these cars or nothing. I suggested a bike micra or yaris and got frowned at.

No they are not.

Of the above, the Mini is apparently the most reliable (comes among the top european manufacturer in reliability surveys).
Having owned three VW's, family members that have owned VW's and used VW work vehicles, I can safely say if everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen, we would all be f***ed! (every one of them has cost thousands in repairs).

If anything goes wrong with a Volkswagen you need to take the car to either a VW dealer, or a specialist that has access to VAG COM to get the fault codes read, as any other fault code reader/diagnostics will not be able to get any info from the ecu. Unless you are friendly with a VW dealer this will set you back around £100 in labour, just to get the code read.

True indeed their diesel engines are better than the petrol ones.

The 1.9 pd unit is excellent, however the Touran at work has had to have the expensive dual mass flywheel replaced. The newer 2 litre diesels are not as good and suffer injector and turbo failings.

I've had 4 golfs and 1 passat, all been super reliable.
