OMO - Recommend me some Walking Boots - Quick

Due to todays weather my trusty old S95 gore-tex boots have fallen apart (well the soles have fallen off) - don't judge them for this. They;re old and have seen me through thousands of miles (including two Nijmegen marches for anyone who knows what that is).

Anyway, I've been leaving a trail of rubber all around the office and could do with some new ones before work tomorrow. Only places that I can get to (weather) are a sports direct and a Blacks. If I'm going to get some, I might as well get a decent pair as am planning to do Three Peaks either this year or next.

So recommend me a make. You have half an hour until I get there (maybe more if the roads are crap). GO!

I just got a pair of leather Meindl hiking boots, they are german and felt like the shoe equivalent of my old bmw e39.

They have vibram soles and gore tex. Already walked 40 miles in them and they are great, worth a look but a bit pricey at £175.

DO NOT GO TO SPORTS DIRECT!! they won't have anything decent, plus they won't have clue what they're talking about (not that they actually have a clue abouts sports gear either)! i'm not the biggest fan of blacks, but at least they are an outdoor clothing etc retailer!

i can't give you a recomendation i'm afraid as i'm not really in the know as to what's good and what's not atm.

If you want something lighter I'm on my second pair of NorthFace Hedgehogs. Comfy from day 1, good grip, waterproof and good for all day walking. No ankle support though.

Currently on offer in Millets for about £60 usually c£100. Blacks may price-match Millets as they are all the same company if I remember.

Later versions have flat laces (which stay done up) and red insoles.

If you do go to Sports Direct, check out the Karrimor stuff. I have a pair of their gortex walking boots that have now done 3 Swedish winters. Mostly walking to and from work in crap conditions. Warm, comfortable and showing very little wear for the mileage they've done.

Cheers, wasn't really going to go to sports direct, more using it to indicate my lack of choice (rather than my preferred Cotswolds or Snow and Rock).

Karrimor kit does have its place... But it's not on my feet.

Cheers for the Meindl recommendation. This was backed up by a friend in the know (who I couldn't contact earlier hence this thread).

I got a pair of these for xmas, comfy as an old slipper and didn't let in a drop of water when I climbed Snowdon in a torrential downpour

PS Field & trek is the same company as sports direct but it's cheap innit.

Years ago I wore a pair of Scarpa SL Attack , they went to Hell and back and were the most dependable bits of kit I had ever owned . They also accepted Berghaus gaiters that had the Rubber Rand that locked into them . They went EVERYWHERE and were brilliant . They eventually died , I now have a set of Karrimor KSB boots that have done a fair few miles in their own right as well . I wouldn`t knock either brand at all but I cannot comment on what they are like now as my KSB`s are about 10 years old .

I'm on my second pair of Berghaus Goretex boots, no wearing in, very supportive and nice and breathable...the first pair lasted me 6 years, lots of walking/hiking through Canada / Fiji etc...I never got major blisters, not even when first using them...

Here's the ones I got recently which I expect to last another 6 years atleast, shop around and you can get them for ~£65 if you're lucky, they're well worth it:

Meindl's would be my choice of recommendation too, if I had the pennies I'd be having myself a pair, borrowed a mate's once and they were amazing. Worth the money indeed.

YC has a pair of Scarpas (Terra GTXs I think) that are serving him very well. I adored my Brashers until they decided to take a flying trip down the motorway. Currently have a pair of NorthFace GTX boots that I ended up getting at a much cheaper price cos couldn't get more Brashers at the time and certainly can't complain for the money.
