Bodgers

Why do the incompetent bodge jobs.

I have just been to see the duchess (Step mother) who has bought a bodged ready to move in bungalow. She is 35 grand lighter after 3 months as she finds and gets stuff fixed.

So today whilst I was visiting she complained about the noise of the extractor in the brand new kitchen. Yes there is a racket.

So a quick look and I lift the steelwork on top to discover there is no vent, so the steam sucked in goes through a filter and back into the room. No sodding good. But absolutely marvellous is the power runs within the duct and as there is no vent kit fitted there is just a big hole above the fan blades.

The cause of the noise is the excess cable dropping into the fan which is making a good job at chewing through the insulation. OK I have now fixed that but if she had not asked me to look I could see a pensioner getting a shock touching the extractor hood. All because some cowboy has bodged.

Vent kit to be ordered this week. Grrhhhh, will I ever get time to play out when being forced to fix others problem houses.

Cowboy builders by the sound of it Tim, not good on a new installation.

Couldn't you get the kitchen installers to sort it out?

The wiring is I agree not good enough but extractors can be set to either vent back into the room via filters or vent to the outside. The former is only useful if the applicance being extracted is not on an outside wall and is usually less efficient. Were the bodgers asked to vent it outside (assuming it was possible)?

When we added an extractor hood in our kitchen the fitters asked us which option we wanted.

Yep, perfectly normal, either vent to atmosphere or re-circulatory installations are fine.

The carbon bead filters along with the grease filter must be installed if using the recirculating option.

I often leave the flex from the motor inside the hood, it's a normal practice but do shorten it or tie it up if there is excess.

There is usually a small cowl (square to round) that sits on the top of the motor section, if this is fitted you don't need any additional ducting for recirculating option.

After beer/football time. so sorry if I come over arsy.

Yes I know it is not mandatory to duct outside an extractor. But whenever I fit one I duct it. I want rid of the steam in my own house and assume others do.

My issue with bodgers is my step mother bought this place tying to make the brake away from family. She wouldn't let us get involved she wanted to do things on her own. She looked at a 2 bed bungalow that she thought ready to move in. In truth it had been given a make over to sell.

She has in the past 3 months had a new bathroom, a new garage and utility. New wardrobes in 2 bedrooms. Laminate in hallway and 2 bedrooms ripped up and replaced with carpet. Sewer from new bathroom to main replaced twice (first was a cowboy) I was up there today to measure for my son to replace 4 month old laminate in lounge/dining room.

Fitters are due this week to install granite worktops to the Howden base units. I am offering to fit her a new kitchen at cost. But she is getting to the end of her tether. The kitchen was brand new when she moved in. First time to use the grill tripped a breaker. When she got the suppliers in it turned out to be an ex demo unit out of warranty etc.

It just annoys me. It is supposed to be a totally refurbed house. Done by professionals. In truth it has been bodged by cowboys looking for a mug to buy.

What really annoys me is that I gave over doing electrics for favours after part P came in. (I hold far higher qualifications but not the basics for domestic electrics. I build power stations for a living.) So not qualified for a part P certification. I see the work of so called professional installers and cringe.

Phil in this case, there are no grease filter or ducting adaptor on top of the cowl, just a hole straight to the fan. I get the feeling this was probably an ex display unit as well.

Cheap jobs get bodged. Jobs done to sell a house are likely to be cheap.

C'est la vie.

I agree with you on electrics, I will always do mine DIY to my standards. At work we have a sparky who wires all our manufacturing kit (up to 600A), who is not allowed to do a full job on home wiring - madness.

I had granite worktops fitted to a cheap 99p B&Q kitchen. Bespoke, Hand crafted, and beautifully installed by some of the finest Lithuanian craftsmen in the UK. 3 grands worth :D....

If that's how she wants it, what's wrong with that?

Re: Bodgers

Couldn't the faulty appliance(s) be replaced rather than whole kitchen?

Unfortunately Ive seem this type of 'tart' up many times, it's to impress potential buyers in the 15 mins they will be in the house, it's only after living in the house for a few days the issues come to light.

You have to run the cable past the fan or it overheats. It was maybe just not taped in place properly
